although i love my lx5....one point may influence your decision....marcum has been in receivership TWICE now

and the new model bird is relatvely untested long term.....even though sitex and the green box made flashers popular

I was searching this thread again because I think I would like a flasher that has an audible fish alarm so I don't have to stare at the screen the whole time. Which models have this feature? Thanks in advance.

Like everyone I have a few cents...and If you want to go quality first, then the Lowrance HDS systems are my choice....because of Broad band sonar, side scan options, and a hundred other add ons which are all plug and play...engine interface (incase you get a boat in the future) screen recording and snap shots, gps and map interface as well a live satalite weather feeds and serius radio....and the list goes on and on.....look onthe web site and if you have any question feel free to ask...and if you want to play befor you buy....you are welcome to join me on the ice and get some hands on...and I am sure other guys with other systems will let you do the same so you can compare...I made a portable case for mine in winter and just pop it in the boat in the spring and have all my waypoints and info all year around. I lnow some guys say there is an issue with the display in cold weather, but I have used mine in -35 and have not had any issues...the HDS systems come in varioius size screens for better price variation and more ways to split the screen and arrange your display layout....any way as i said....my two cents...

i own the marcum lx5 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a flasher, and i haven't even caught a fish while using it yet. i'm a new fisher... err, angler? lol and i have been skunked the few times i've been out this year.
it's still alot of fun watching the flasher, and seeing fish swim up from the bottom and basically stare at your lure. there's a level of excitement you feel when you see a fish show up on your flasher!
i was a little skeptical on the battery life, considering it'd be used for hours at a time and in the cold. so i wasted my money and bought a spare battery. well, i haven't had to use it yet. on a ice fishing trip this winter, i had the flasher out for approx 20 hours, and in -34 weather. i didn't have to charge the battery once.

Thumbs up Flasher

I use a Vexlar FL20 and really like it. I wouldn't be without it. A good friend uses the Marcum 5 and he really likes it. There pricey but you won't regret it. We use them on lakers mostly but I have used them on other species. The They both work well in the cold and are very detailed. Watching fish rip off the botton and grab your bait is exciting. You can also really work the fish if it is a bit slow. Happy shopping.
