Default Rem 91/2 large rifle primers vs Fed 215m

Talking with my gun smith on the weekend and he said he was talking with a fellow that said even in magnums he uses non magnum primers. So I thought I would do a little test. The gun is just a Tikka T3 300 win mag with a Boyd's stock. I am using 180 accubonds seated to fit the mag. All groups were 5 shot and barrel was thoroughly cleaned after each group. Powder used was H4831.

75gr Rem 91/2. Average velocity 2874, .690" group

75gr Fed215m. Average velocity 2957, 1.939" group

76gr Rem 91/2. Average velocity 2918, .870" group

76gr Fed 215m. Average velocity 2976, 2.425" group

I never thought that just changing the primer could make such a big difference in velocity or group size.

The conclusion is that you gain velocity but groups open up with the magnum primers. You can't get much better statistics than actually experimenting yourself as you have. In my case, my .223 HB, 69gr SMK's and Varget, by using CCI 450M primers, I gain velocity and tighter groups, as compared to CCI BR4's

How many shots in a group and how many groups did you shoot. Are you going to try other brands of primers both magnum and non magnum.

I just shot the 4 5 shot groups. I am going to try WLRM primers and see how the compare to the Fed215m. I also want to try Fed210m vs the Rem91/2.

My nephew has a 338wm that we tried 4 different bullets and 6 different powders and none shoot better than 1-1/2". All of these loads were with Fed215m primers. It never even crossed my mind that the primers could be the problem.

I am having this exact problem with my 270wsm. I have tried Partitions and Accubonds in different weights with RL19, IMR4350 and IMR 7828 and cant get a group better than 1.75"

Yet my 270WSM using the 130gr Accubond in front of R-22 and a Fed 215 primer is a 1/2moa rifle. I also use the Fed 215 in every one of my other magnum chamberings, and accuracy has never been an issue. It's all about finding the correct combination of components, and fine tuning the load.

Default Federal 215's

I load Federal 215's or 215 Match in all my magnum loads. I even use 215's in standard cartridges burning @ 60 grains of powder. Increased accuracy and velocity in most cases. In cartridges burning 45 grains of powder I use Fed 210 or Fed 210 Match.

I think it was the Federal 215 magnum primer that was recommended for the big magnum cases with lots of powder (Weatherbys and similar) as they were supposed to provide a hotter spark.

Good post. I use 215s in the cases holding more than 85 grains of powder and they all shoot under an inch. It is a so much hotter primer than the CCI mag and even slightly hotter than the Winchester mag that I am not surprised it was messing with the groups sizes in relatively small capacity cases. You see the same group expansion in a 22 Hornet if you use small rifle primers instead of small pistol primers. The more robust ignition of the rifle primers causes groups to open up big time.

I use CCI mag primers in all my other hunting loads from 243 on up. They are quite a bit milder than the 215s but still a bunch hotter than a standard rifle primer so you get good cold weather ignition.

You don't know what works for shrinking groups till you give it a try.

I agree, My 7mm rem mag using 66.0gr of RL22, Fed 215m primers and 140gr TTSX's shoots 1/2 moa aswell.
I guess ill try a different primer and see how that goes.
What are you using for brass elk?

my favourite starting primers are the rem 9.5's and 7.5's for smaller cartridges ... there is a site that shows the spark of all primers and the rem's have the biggest spark which in my mind ignites a greater surface area more consistently ... than say a smaller hotter spark ... my .02
