Default Alberta/CANADA tar sands..

Just was wandering why we call it the Alberta or Canadian tars sands when in all actuality it's owned by CHINA...Politically correct term would be the Chinese tar sands located it Alberta Canada

Better question is why would you call them tar sands since there is no tar there?

Default Snap out of it

China has some investiture in the Oil Sands via the purchase of Nexen some time back and other investments but China sure as hell does not own anywhere close to a majority of them.

China also owns a 20% stake in Teck Resources because of the financing it lent to Teck Resources 1 year after Teck Resources bought out Fording Coal for 14.5 billion back in 2008.China did this as a way to secure supplies of raw resources.

By the way only leftist greenie environamentalists call the Oil Sands the Tar Sands. As an Albertan calling the Oil Sands the Tar Sands....well you should be tarred and feathered.

I can't help but wonder how anyone could possibly get the idea that China owns the tar sands.

Given the size of the oilsands, and the huge leases held by other companies , such as Syncrude,Suncor, Albian Sands, and many others, Petro China hardly owns a major share of the oilsands.

Sorry pal - they were the Athabasca Tar Sands back when I was still peeing my pants and before any leftist greenie from the hip hippy peacecreeps even lived in Alberta.

Oil Sands is just a corporate spin name to make the extraction more palatable to the naive.

You from around here boy?

They were calling it the Tarsands since I hit town in 1973, I see no reason to change now .
And yeah, there are many owners other than the Chinese.

You guys forget that foreigners may own the extraction and processing facilities, but it's the people of Alberta who own the resource and their government who charges a (reportedly measly by world standards) royalty on same.

So how much of the tar sands does China own?

10's of billions or 100's of billions?

Anyone who calls them oil sands should have their man card revoked.

Who owns the other 49%? Canadians? Doubt it.

What percent of Alberta's oil sands industry is owned by real Canadian companies (corps whose majority of shareholders reside in Canada)?

Just what proof do you have that the Chinese own 51% of the tarsands?

I bought Suncor shares about 5 years ago for $23.50 and today the shares have nearly doubled.

Anyone who wants to can buy shares in nearly all of the companies operating in the oil sands of Alberta.

Had I had some spare money in the late 60's when GCOS (Great Canadian Oil Sands), which is now Suncor, was starting up to invest in I would have made a very good investment return.

Are there people out there that are not aware that practically all pension funds, including CPP, have a large share of their income generated from investments in oil sands companies?
