Question Geese and the snow

I am torn between setting up for geese tomorrow morning OORRR going out to try again to get my bull elk. The biggest deciding factor I guess is "What will the impending snowfall do to the birds"??

Does a guy have to constantly wipe or clean the dekes off?

Will the birds even fly??

In the snow and when it cools off I have often seen the geese come out late, like 11 and stay out until 3 or so and then head back to the water.

As for the dekes, silos work better when its snowing, if you got them.

The are called WaterFowl for a good reason.

They love foul weather. Best time to hunt them.

But I'd go for the Elk first. Chances are the Geese will stick around for a while yet.
I hunted them up here in early November, I'm sure they must stay much later down there.

Matter of fact we still have Ducks here, but the last Geese left about a week ago.

Alot of geese never leave southern AB thanks to the Oldman River dam. Ive shot geese well into December down here. Dang its cold tho.....

Bob:

Look at the size of them. They must think the NSR is a Spa or something.

It is snowing this evening. Next stop...keep us updated.

seen lots of good eating legal bulls in wmu 400 this summer, however they are deep in there, close to the BC border, but maybe with this storm they headed more east?

Flyguyd had it right....many years on december 20th,dad and I hunted ducks and geese off the waterton resevoir,on the hutterites land.

Haha, I had NO luck what so ever in 400, man is that a tough place to hunt!! I have a few good spots way back and hadnt seen much for sign this year in there.

I would much rather get permission in 305 and hike the same amount of KM but much easier km then in the 400 Im still fairly new at elk hunting, This season being my 3rd, so I am not very picky at all. Wanna fill my freezer hopefully with a bull before the season is out!!

On a side note or an update for my trip today, I had run into 3 small herds, all were deep in the trees, trying to keep out of the wind and snow I assume. All the visible ones were cows, Although after I bumped them (the first herd) to see if there where any animals I didnt see. They went the exact opposite way I wanted them too But I did see 3 extra sets of tracks walking away, dunno if they were cows too or possibly my elk lmao.
Much better this time out actually seeing some sign so fingers crossed next weekend I can find a bull and put some of that VERY VERY tasty meat in my freezer. I did remember my slingshot this time too, and put the drop on a few ruffies so I didnt come home empty handed for once lol.

Really, Hope the FIL shares with you lmao. I havent hunted elk for long, but coming from the north country to see what the south has to offer for deer, im becoming less of a deer hunter!! Would rather hunt elk or birds!

Once you hear your first possible bull kill screaming mad and coming in bugling hard, your gonna be converted into an elk hunter lol

They are a very majestic animal, and so tasty! The FIL & BIL's bow hunt them in 400....They had a beast on trail camera from this summer,(7x6,350"ish) but never could get close enough to him...I just want one to eat,but would gladly shoot big boy with the rifle ....OMG,packing that thing out would be an adventure....high up in the Alpine, just below the sheep.
