Default Kijiji Question

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I posted a washer/dryer for sale on kijiji. I priced it high because from experience I know I will get low offers and eventually someone will meet in the middle and we will have a deal.

Anyway, 10 minutes after posting the ad I get a message in the kijiji app from this woman saying she's looking at the ad with her brother and he's interested and can I email him at this email address and let him know if it's still available.

Sounds odd, why wouldn't I just let them know through the app. Anyway I email him saying hi, it's still available.

16 hours later he replies back saying that he will be moving over here soon and will have a local mover pick it up from me before he moves here and that he will send me a Certified Cashiers Cheque and will add $50 to the asking price to secure the deal. So he wants me to send him my name, address, phone number so he can have the payment mailed out ASAP.

So this just totally sounds weird to me. Doesn't ask a single question about the washer/dryer, and throws in an extra 50.

So I email him back saying that etransfer works for me. thanks

He replies back right away saying, sorry that doesn't work for me as I don't have access to my online banking at the moment hence why I don't mind waiting til cheque clears to schedule pickup.

This whole thing just sounds weird to me. What do you think?
thanks

Best thing about kijiji is there is no limit on how many replies you can ignore. If it sounds sketchy, it most likely is. Delete message and move along

This is a very well known Kijiji scam. If you’re bored you can string them along and waste their time, but there’s no question it’s a scam.

Have a look at the kijiji page "How to Recognize Fraud".

SCAMMER.

Tell him you'll ship to Nigeria if he emt's an extra 5 grand. Then politely ask him if the words sex and travel have any significance.

Then break up laughing and throw your best Swahili at him.

Sister brings cash for full price, you will hold machine or she can take it with her. Outside that, tell him to bog off. Bogus "Cashiers Cheques" can take a couple of months to come back as forged.

I have had a couple scam replies to ads, one of them quite crafty. I report them to Kijiji and they are quite appreciative of being made aware.

What will happen is they will cancel the deal and pressure you for the “extra” $50 back- even though it was never deposited in the first place. It’s a classic kijiji scam that must work as it’s old as the hills.

I posted 2 ads (both in the camera section) recently and within an hour had a guy request me to "email his dad @". I responded thru Kijiji "yes they're available" and never heard back. On later checking his profile he'd been a member for just the 1day.

I put in my add, (cash upon pick up only) and I still get scam replies. It's like they have an automatic computerized reply. If you want to sell on kijiji you need to be ready to sift the replies and unless they do show up in person walk away.

i use a great come back...especially if its a phone scam...in your best contest spokesman sales voice i tell them that they are the ??? caller and have won the latest gift. however they need to answer a skill testing question. here are the clues... the number 4 and 5 and the letters A and C and P please just tell me your address and i will send it express shipping and if you answer within the next 1 minute we will send you at no additional charge a 2nd prize same as the 1st one at super fast free shipping... at this point i have heard computer typing and then a swear words and then a hang up...hehehehe...LOL.
and since this is Canada. and probably illegal...THIS IS JUST A JOKE

Same here. If they aren't offering cash I don't even reply to the email.
If its by phone and they don't say that magic word (cash) I just hang up.
I'm not interested in their "creative financing".
