I keep a welder's chipping hammer stashed in a few handy places, occasionally they come in handy. At the age of 11 I learned one real important lesson about attempting to use a weapon to defend yourself... make sure your attacker cant get ahold of it. A chipping hammer is real hard to grab hold of, you cant block it without getting hurt pretty bad, and being a welder I've got a good excuse for having one on hand.
A couple days ago I go cut off by a jacked up rig rocket and gave the guy the finger. At the next light a burly rig hand jumped out of the truck and started walking towards my car, probably expecting my to turtle in my car while he rained verbal abuse on me... instead he ended up turning around halfway and making a tacical retreat back to his truck.

I'd be embarrassed to run that report on nothing.
Those people are mentally unstable.
No talk about educating your kids not to assault others. Respect others. Don't do crime.
No talk about actual effective enforcement of the laws and appropritate sentencing under law.
I've carried a pocket knife since I was 6. All my years of school. Sometimes I have a 3-4" knive on a belt clip. I have never harmed anyone. I'm pretty popular when someone needs a knife for a little errand.
I think I'll push to ban over-sized sunglasses (because some gangsta women wear them), puffy jackets (because some gangstas wear them), men whose women/partners have their balls in a jar on the shelf (no explanation needed).
Violence (crime in general) is, for the most part, a social/economic issue and a lack of proper deterence through effective enforcement and punishment.

It basically looks like a small tomahawk. One end of the head is a spike, and the other end is a chisle. Generaly pretty light, with a short handle. I dont do the cut and paste thing but if you just Google "chipping hammer" a bunch of options will come up.
Back in 88' I was about the only white kid in Wabasca and a couple bigger kids were hunting me, so I took to carying a large lock on a length of rope in my pocket. When they finally did get me cornered they got the lock away and bruised me up pretty good with it. Since then I've know a couple guys who have had roughly the same experience using a baseball bat. My takeaway is that anything you plan on using had better be real hard to grab ahold of, and it had better be something your not shy about using in earnest.

Goes for any weapon:
Carry a firearm? no point unless you are already mentally prepared to kill another human being, ditto a knife (as a weapon)
No point in showing a weapon to the malfeasants in the hope they will be scared off - the right approach with any weapon is to use it before they know you have it.
As a character in popular trash fiction says "get your retaliation in first"
I think that takes quite a bit more mental toughness than many people (or at least me) possess

The real problem is lack of law enforcement. Plenty of kids in malls, on transit, LRT stations etc. waving around their cheap knives, stabbing each other and threatening everyone else.
Tiring to say the least, but just another big city issue.

Apparently “switchblades” are available at every corner store these days. Even though they have been banned in Canada for what, 50 years or so?

Last year I was entering Rogers arena for an oil king game. There were a couple of elderly gentlemen (like me) just in front of me and when they went through the metal detector one of them put his little jackknife in the tray beside the detector. He was then told he could not bring it in to the arena. He said ok I will pick it up after. He was told that was not an option and because they had been given a ride to the game could not return it to his car. So he lost the knife and he appeared very distraught as it obviously had special meaning for him and I would guess it may have been used on hundreds of bales of hay in its day.

Most pocket knives have two blades that you can open either one.
Perhaps switching between blades, in the bright minds of the councillors on this topic, now constitutes a switchblade knife.
I would not put this thought process past the acceptance of Ms Ashley Salvador

I do no wade into the General Discussion folder often but this topic was of interest to me. Just thought I would add this piece from an Edmonton Journal article, originally from April 9th.
"City police on Monday announced the seizure of 185 weapons from 5 Star Gift and Smoke Shop near 105 Street and 107 Avenue on April 4. Police say they seized 100 large canisters of bear spray, 30 butterfly knives, 20 pairs of brass knuckles, 20 canisters of small hand-held bear spray, five flashlight-style Tasers, illicit tobacco, and a controlled substance, believed to be khat, for the purpose of trafficking."
Sounds like a shady business owner exploiting people's fears and creating harm in doing so. The unfortunate thing is these items will likely be for sale down the street. Desperate people do desperate things. Also of note, while switchblades were not sold nor found butterfly knives are also prohibited in Canada.
This is the article of you are interested in reading it:

I think it is a good idea. Then we can ban all cameras - that will eliminate child pornography

These knife classification laws are a laugh, pure Hollywood. A butterfly or Balisong knife in the hands of a typical homeless druggie thug would likely provide more of a threat to themselves trying to look cool during the silly opening animation.
What would be more reliable than a fixed blade? Such silly laws by fearful ignorant politicians.
Another laugh is these illegal handheld flashlight style tasers. About as dangerous as a hairdryer with a frayed cord.

I almost had this happen too. I'd been to the odd hocky game at the old arena and never even thought they might take my knife at the new one. When I saw those metal detectors I thought I was screwed, and the knife in my pocket had quite a bit of sentimental value. I discretely stuffed it in my sock then went through, and somehow the detector never picked it up. Got lucky I guess.

I suspect having a knife detected hidden in your sock, would have been much worse for you that it being in your pocket. You are fortunate inded.

X2.
. I carry an over 30 year old Leatherman PST. on my belt every where I go. And carry a small pocket knife to. Wouldn’t want to lose either. A guy gets attached to them.
Lost a pocket clip knife I had maybe 10 years. Went to use it and it was gone. That hurt. I replaced it but new one just wasn’t the same so it’s in a drawer somewhere not used. I still catch myself two years later reaching the pocket for it.

Its more like two little old ladies that want to ban knifes not the city .
What I do agree on ,they should have a age limit to buy them.
Don't need a 10 year old buying a knife

Why not? I got my first knife when I was 6, was in my pocket everywhere I went, pretty much all the boys at elementary carried a pocket knife, sharpened our pencils, carved a lot of sticks, gutted fish and so on.
It is not the knives that are the problem, it is the people carrying them. Same as guns. We have a society today with a large portion that can't handle any personal responsibility and don't have the maturity and mental tools at a young age to deal with something that doesn't go their way. Ban the guns, the knives, then what baseball bats, hockey sticks, axes, shovels and rope.
When will we get it through our thick skulls that teaching morals, personal responsibility and ethics will go a lot farther than banning objects while ignoring the real problem.. We need to start raising our kids right instead of letting schools, social media do it.
What is wrong with kids today?...... Mostly lack of parenting and discipline..

Just had a chit chat with a young lad who is a detective with EPS… he said plain and simple: it is getting worse every year and it will get even worse than it is now. Edmonton police hands are tight by the politics of the city mayor and city councillors. Very damaging left ideology. Cops can do nothing about it. Even if they do- the perpetrators are out in a matter of hours.
Until the criminals will feel the fear of the imminent punishment- nothing will change, they are becoming bolder and bolder! The even bigger problem- kids! They learn fast, they are encouraged by the adults to commit crime because they will not get punished, slap on the wrist is max what they get! Those two 14 year old punks who beat random people almost to death- they are already out! The reason for the attach- it’s a sort of the initiation into the gang… they had to prove themself!
