Think your truck is covered on ice? Maybe not.

So I have comprehensive insurance through TD on my truck, figured I'd call to see if I would be covered. Was on and off hold for about 30 minutes before I got the real answer. Asked them, if I drive my truck out onto a lake to go ice fishing, would I be covered if it fell though? Got put on hold. Comes back to tell me yes, I would be covered. I asked if recovery fees would be covered, he said he doubted it. So I said, you're sure I'd be covered? He said yes, I was covered for sinking. So I said "You're sure?, because I've heard some people were told they're covered if on an engineered ice road, but not if they go off road driving onto a lake." So, got put back on hold for 10 minutes, so he could check with a manager. Comes back, guess what I AM NOT COVERED. The sinking part of my comprehensive only covers when being transported by another vehicle, such as a barge.

Just a heads up to all that think they may be covered, maybe call and probe a little deeper to make sure.

1) - Only if on a Structured Ice road ( NWT Ice Road kinda thing )
2) - My Vehicle is not intended for Off Road Use ( 2011 Dodge Caravan )


That's pretty much what my insurance said today , My vehicles Intended use is not for Off Road Use . So I imagine if you had a 4x4.....

you know how when you get insurance , they ask about how many rough kilometers you will use a year , your daily travel distance and what your intended uses are for your vehicle, and at that point if you said I drive on ice and off road, they may adjust your plan for this....

However, I am not covered if I go thru !

My truck is a 4x4. Basically I'm posting this because I had to ask a lot of questions even after being told yes I was covered, to find out that in fact, I would not be covered if I broke through going ice fishing. Just got off the phone with TD insurance about 15 minutes ago. Oh, I also asked if there was something I could add to my policy to cover me for ice fishing, and the answer was no.

Yep be carefully people. Be clear with your insurance people. They didn't profit 4 billion last year cuz they payed out in every claim.

My insurance outfit asked about 4 X 4 and they also wanted to know my knowledge and how long I've been ice fishing.

Had to edit. Sorry but been answering several pm about insurance coverage. The person I know that went through this "truck through the ice" stuff.

He was with Allstate in 2004 when I t happened

The recovery outfit hired to get the vehicle out had to do some paper work with the insurance company. They were asked to explain the conditions of the ice. I believe through Alberta transport safety act? Anyways if he had driven on 6" ice or something we all know to be stupid he likely would have been denied the claim, however the recovery company put in writing that point of entry and most spots were 18-20" of Ice (deemed safe for vehicle) and yet be hit a soft spot or bad luck I guess. And therefore was covered fully! Of course he had FULL coverage and did have to pay $500 deductable.

I didnt think u could pay more either, they only said if its my vehicles intended use to drive on ice they would cover it, like a semi truck driver that knows he will be driving on ice has to pay ...... ? I wish i had good friends in this department lol

I'm with meloche monnex Td insurance.
They stated both my vehicles were insured 4x4 truck, and car.
The only thing not covered was environmental fees, and fishing gear which is under house insurance. My quad which is under bare minimal coverage also isn't covered on or off the truck on ice. What's the cost of environmental fees anyways?

I'm with intact, I have a 2003 fx4 level 2 ranger and I am not covered. Even though my vehicles intended purpose is offroading.

I asked, I was told in no way shape or form risking my own integrity and safety by driving my vehicle on the ice under any circumstances would I be covered. No matter what coverage, deductible, anything. They stated most insurance companies DO NOT offer any form of coverage for driving on to lakes, unless it is an actual ice road.

After reading these posts I decided to look into my insurance ( Morgex ). Well after asking a few questions I was told yes I would be covered if I went through. I also would be covered for the salvage of the vehicle. I then asked for a email and WRITTEN letter as well. My agent agreed no problem. I'm still skeptical though. I'm going to wait for the letter first I think. Insurance companies don't get rich by throwing there ( our ) money away. Side note as well , I called AMA and asked if they would tow me out if I had gotten stuck on a lake. Nope you have to be on a publicly maintained road. Glad I made the call. Might just walk out I'm thinking and save myself the hassle. Great post by the way.

If your insurance says yes ,get them to fax it to you.
Been told yes before and when it came to collect they ask who told you that.

That's exactly who I'm with, and they said they don't cover me, and there is nothing I could ever purchase that would cover me. I'd ask for some written proof if I were you.

I'm with TD meloche money they told me I'm covered if I go for a swim. I've also got buried deep years ago the tow operator didn't want to drive pull me out,after some convincing he did,

Pretty wicked prerunner, but with the level 2 package it is built for off road. Full skid plate underneath, f150 rear differential, Torsen limited slip axle, 31" all terrains on mine. Pretty sure id know AJ.

Haha my truck has the Z71 package and 31" tires. Doesn't make it an intended off road vehicle haha. It's a on highway vehicle just like yours, not an ATV haha haha

I don't believe I used the words ATV in any way shape or form. Please don't put words in my mouth.

I said my vehicles intended purpose is off roading, the trim package I have is what my insurance company has it listed as. I don't understand what you're trying to get across.


I simply said my insurance company will not cover any aspect of driving on a lake no matter what coverage. Even with a 4x4.

My point about the off highway is that your vehicle (ford ranger) is not intended for off road use, it is designed ( and registered ) as a highway vehicle. It might have an "off-road package" but at the end of the day it's still a truck as far as your insurance sees it. Not putting words in your mouth but simply using ATV as a reference. Sorry about the reality check. Cool truck though

You may want to talk to someone else also maybe higher up the chain.
I'm with Td now and I had them fax me a letter when I changed over that I would be covered in the event of breaking through the ice while fishing. It was deemed to be covered as it is considered under collision (as in collision with the ice which I know sounds weird) and they pay for the vehicle and recovery.
I know a guy through a relative who sunk his truck on Siebert Lake and he had the guaranteed replacement cost coverage which is available for new vehicles. It was lamost set to expire I think after 2 years when it happened and they gave him a cheque for a new truck. Definitely worth it in his case.

I will probably call again in a couple days with this info and try to get to the bottom of this, as I have TD through Monex also, and they said no coverage is even available for ice fishing. I'd sure like to be covered!

I was told I would be covered by AMA but only if I was in a situation like there was a dozen other trucks out there some the same size or bigger and I was the poor guy who found a soft spot or something. I don't rely on this info and and except the chances of being on a big sheet of ice. My best guess is if I fell through on the road everyone has been using they might cover me. The secound I leave that road I'm thinking I'm SOL.

I have td just called tonight. Full coverage as good as u can't get 2015 gmc 3500. NOT COVERED!!!!! So many wrong answers from ins company who is right only one way to find out put I'm gonna pass
