My first Burbot!
FINALLY!!! What a great time we had out tonite in the ice shanty. We managed 5 burbs in 3 hours, with 4 that we lost. We released two and kept three. I am certain you can tell by the look on my face that it has been a long time coming!!
My first Burb!
G's first Burb!
G with the biggest Burb of the night, C & R.
What a great time, now to thaw and fry my first one up for a midnight snack!!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out with tidbits of information to help me find Burbot, I really appreciate it!

Congrats. I haven't caught one yet, but maybe this winter. I heard they're wonderful with butter and garlic.

Thanks fellas, yeah ABD it was delish when fryed up with garlic butter. I can see why it is called poor mans lobster, really firm meat. Very similar to snake meat, but tastes better. I figured keeping a smaller one would be better, but there is not much meat on the little guy's. The one I cooked up was 24 inches long, but as thin as a shoe lace.
I skinned it with the nail in the head on a 2x4 method, really effective, and very easy.
How do you cook burbot? How long? Burbot burgers??? Any suggestions?

Good to hear you had a good night out. One other thing we tried this week was put a stinger hook on the jigs. Those that you sometimes miss we caught on the stinger. Also with burbs let them take the hook good as we have watched them on the camera take the bait real slow. Don't cook them for more than a few minutes. They are also great in beer batter, put steak spices and fry in butter as well.

Well done! I am still looking for my first. Saw 2 on the cam at gull yesterday, but they were on the move, stopped to take a quick sniff at the minnow,, smiled, waved at the camera, and moved on like Jay-lo shaking her booty!, Next time Burbs!!!
BTW any one with some hot burb spots would love a heads up!

Great job on a first burb! Those things are ugly looking creatures, look almost like an eel!

the smaller ones are almost a waste to take cuz of the lack of meat. i like the 6 to 8 lb fish for the bigger fillets

Hello Tuc,
I have not tried to skin a pike using this technique, but I would imagine it would work, dependant on the size of the pike and the thickness of their skin. The burbot skin came off like a sock! It was really neat to see the tail and fins, without skin!
I hear pike are much tastier without the skin, it takes the fishy taste away, so does rinsing the filets in vinager.

They still give better yield than a perch for your effort, especially in lakes where you can still keep 10. I kept a coupl little ones last year (15-16'') that took the hook a little deep and was pleasantly surprised.
Nice burbot you got there, i can't wait till February when the fishing really picks up.
