Obed, kinky or Wildhorse
Hey,
I am going to be in Hinton this weekend, and wondering which of the 3 lakes is the best bet?
I know Obed can be slow. But any input would be appreciated.

Depends what you are looking for.
Kinky and Wildhorse are pretty shallow and prone to winter kill and low oxygen late winter.
Obed has some perch and Browns if that is what you are interested in, and a fair bit of 30 foot water.

Was it a complete winterkill? They stocked a small amount there this year?
Any other suggestions for trout in the area?

Obed has been restocked. It is possible an old one or two could survive.
My recommendation would be Millers Lake which is 20 kms West of Edson.

It is restocked, and there is the odd big fish in there still. But that lake was so painfully tough to fish for browns before the kill that I wouldn't even bother for a few years personally. That was a one bite a day lake on hardwater in good times.

There is also Petite lake north of town. No idea how well it over winters though.

How does one come to the conclusion if a certain lake is winterkilled or not? Is it just based on not catching anything? If so wouldn't that be just chalked up to a slow day?

Even if it wasn't winterkilled, I wouldn't send anyone to Obed that wasn't a dyed in the wool trophy hunter...or a masochist...

lol don't worry you won't be seeing me there. I never found the appeal of trout fishing myself especially in crowded stocked ponds so it's all yours. It was more of a general question on how someone can confidently make the claim that a lake was entirely winterkilled. I watched the video and see all the dead browns but doesn’t that also happen with whitefish in other lakes during summer algae blooms? I think it’s a safer bet to say it’s partially winter killed. But then again I don't study trout so maybe I'm missing something and that they're more susceptible to a low oxygen environment, who knows.

Thought the same, only fairly large dead fish on the video very little small ones.
Hard to say how much of winterkill it was. Idk

Great, so you want to weigh in on a lake you care nothing about. Thanks for your input. Also, no one said entirely - those are your words.
PM sent and hopefully the OP has a good day fishing somewhere else.

Well I've ice fished it twice in the last 15 years, last time 4 years ago. Were the only guys on the lake both times. So, far from overcrowded.
Saying that, Never had a bite nor seen a fish either time. Last time fished from 1' to the deepest part of the trough, tried all corners....never even seen a perch minnow. Marked some fish in the deeps but no interest from them.
Fished like it was winter killed...to me.. but I think there were good fish caught the next summer.
Goofy lake. Told myself I'm never going back for strike 3.

That's interesting. A couple weeks ago I was talking to a guy at Pigeon and he was telling me he was catching all kinds of decent sized perch in Hasse. He kind of implied it was recent too. And then he showed me a video he recorded of him catching the perch. But who knows, considering what everyone is saying about winter kill he might have been at a different lake.
