Default Aoudad Sheep

Has anyone brought an Aoudad mount across the boarder from Texas? I'm trying to figure out if a need a CITES permit but keep hitting dead ends. I talked to F&W down here and they don't seem to have a clue about what I am talking about.

I guess I should have made my comment more clear. When I stated "F&W down here", I was referring to the American side.

Yes you will need some paperwork. I lost my head at the border never to be seen again.

Interesting. There is a Federal fish and game gal at the Coutts crossing. She does export permits. She should know. Try giving her a call

That’s a good question. I can’t remember now. I don’t think a cities is required for a feral goat.

They are CITES. Get that and a U.S fish and wildlife 3-177 form, fill it all out and send the paperwork ahead of time to a commercial port of entry like Sweetgrass to the Fush and Wildlife office there and see what else you need, do it all by email and keep track of it all and have the conversation in hand when u get to the border

Whoever your hunting with should know if it’s a cites animal or not
And they should tell you, and help with the paperwork

I’m surprised it’s a cites animal, especially with it being a transplanted non native species that isn’t at risk

Any animal listed is listed because it is endangered somewhere in the world. One year I tried taking an Australian water buffalo accross the border and was asked at the border if it was wild or feral? I said wild and they refused it because water buffalo were endangered in Nepal so they were on the list. All bear ,cats are too. You see hunting shows where in Texas they stack up the bobcats but yet they are CITES. Its because you cannot prove country of origin even though it is coming out of that country, its a way they can control the movement of any of those animals, transplanted or not

Thanks for the responses, I’ll try the lady at Coutts. They call under CITES appendix II, so I guess you don’t need a import permit, just a export.

I'll see if I can get her # for you. Buddy had all the contacts as he had to export a couple sheep this summer. Make it a bit easier

I went with True Grit when I was living down here. Wasn’t planning on coming back, so I wasn’t too concerned about exporting my Ram.

You both lost your rams?

What part of TX did you hunt and what time of year? I’d like to do a West Texas mountain hunt but I think I can get a really good deal on a low fence Hill Country tree stand over a feeder archery hunt so might try that first.

From what I've heard, auodad in the low fence Hill Country are not appreciated. Many shoot them on sight. They are quite aggressive and drive other animals away from the feeders and water tanks.

Just what I've read on a forum with many Texas members.

Yeah man, both of us and 2 others from here as well, so 4 total with no help from the outfitter. One member drove down to pick them up at Coutts and was turned around at the border, where they were confiscated never to be seen again. We got the mounts done at a taxidermist recommended by the outfitter, and then shipped to Montana as one of our group was going to be down there anyway to pick them up.

Was a complete BS deal as soon as the hunt was done. We hunted in February south of Van Horn, free range, right along the Rio Grande in the mountains, was as close to a sheep hunt as you'll get there.....the mountains in the background of my pic are all in Mexico. We did see desert sheep too on the hunt, which is likely as close as i'll ever get to actually hunting them lol. The hunt was actually pretty fun, but the outfitter left us high and dry as soon as we were on the plane home. Feel free to send a PM if you want any more info.

They confiscated your trophies and didn’t give you a chance to get the right paperwork in place with CITES? That’s pretty strict. This is at the Canadian side when trying to return? Or is it an export issue with US customs?

Great looking billy (or is it called a ram?)

It’s an export issue with USFW.

That would really suck, especially after paying the taxidermy and shipping costs. I'm glad I read this thread or I likely would have made the same mistake.

I guess it is the same as wolves are here. I can shoot as many as I want and throw them in the bush but customs treats them like an endangered species.
