Best deer I've ever had on my cams and I never hunted him, which is a long story.

Anyway, sorry to derail the topic.

Yeah it's sure catching on I've been doing it in one state of or another for over 10 years getting really into it now with the mock scrape with the hanging Branch all that stuff. now I just got to get some better cameras all three of my spy points are dead now.

Well it was a long nasty drag out of the trench but the delay is mostly AO just not working lol

So my buddy came up from Calgary to do some hunting and started off with some bad luck. The wind conditions were poor for his one stand and someone set up camp where he parks to walk into his other stand. Since his opinions were not looking good and he is in OK shape I offered him the chance to sit in my stand at the bottom of the trench. He was unsure on the spot at first because it has had inconsistent mature buck movement. It’s not the style of location he would normally choose. After explaining that it’s an area where 6 heavy trails cris cross in view of the stand making it hard to inventory the stand with one cam. Then showing him the high density of does on cam explaining it was set using the does as bait for some of the big roaming bucks we knew of in the area he was up for it

I hike him into the stand and give him the rundown on how the trails are laid out then leave. I hike out get to my truck to start driving and I get a call buck down. Within 1 1/2hrs on stand a shooter came in nose to the ground following the trail perfectly as I predicted. 30yard broadside shot and down within 50yards

It took longer for us to pack this buck then it did to hike in and sitting time. All up hill back to the truck

He is the same guy who got the light rack crab claw 9pt this year it’s a light rack crab claw 10pt

I get very few light rack deer on cam and very few crab claw bucks but he seems to kill them as soon as he get on stand lol

I don’t normally do black face but I was not going to post his face without permission lol

Unfortunately my wife had a clean miss on a big target buck this morning. She was still huffing and puffing from walking in. Buck showed up right way and she was not as steady as she normally is. I just got back from running a grid search for any sign of a hit but no blood, no hair, no staggered tracks after covering a 200yard square together

I really hope she her luck improves because she puts in the work start to finish. She is out there all day and she is on my heels scouting for a good portion of the time I am out there. Someone has already pushed her out of one of her favorite spots from following her tracks to her location

Out of those who hunt with me she truly puts in the work

I have the meat heads coming out to hunt starting tomorrow so let’s see how things are going to end

The bucks in my area are big bodied on average but this one is fairly common for his age in this area.

Oh he was happy and always appreciative. He does come up and does pre season scouting. He sets his 2 of his own stands too. He just doesn’t have the ability to invest the time he wants to do to work and distance

He is a good man and I know he will return the favor when I choose to come south for mule deer or pronghorn

I shot this bush buck yesterday.
If you look at the time, it was right at last legal light!
Took us a few minutes to get back to the truck, grab the packs, and head in to recover him

Congrats to those who have been successful

I have also received a PM with a pic of a nice bush buck from a AO member I have been discussing tactics and bush buck movements with. Hopefully he decides to start a thread and share his story

Almost wish I saved my tag for a little longer just so I could continue to enjoy the pursuit.

Thank you very much but it will be a long time before I can draw a tag. I think I am 6years archery and 4 trophy. Like I tell the wife I may have to go south of the border if I want to shoot an antelope in my lifetime the way wait times keep increasing

Things are heating up and everything is looking good. My brother and cousin arrived this morning and will be hunting till at least the 24th. The Rookie from work will be coming down for some calling lessons on the 22. The wife is still grinding it out.

This next few days could be interesting and I maybe a little sore from playing pack mule by the time it’s all over

Well done (again!)

Have you had much success with rattling, or other calling sequences this late in the season? You information over the last few years has been incredible!

Thanks

J

Well my cousin has only ever shot a doe before and is mostly a bear/moose hunter

The goal was to get him his first buck and he had no real high standards. His goal was really just something mid size

He had a chance at a big 10pt but couldn’t get a shot. He passed on a bunch of little guys too. Today he had an 8pt come in and decided he would be happy with him. Took him at 35yards with a 45/70(like I said normally hunts moose/bear lol) buck piled up 40yards from the shot

Not a giant but a first buck he is happy with and that is what matters

We have not used rattling at all this season just grunts and bleats. They are in cruse mode now so calling is less effective. Some are responding but most are nose down and brain dead
