Default What is this rodent?

I ran into this little guy in Kananaskis region. It was about 1.5inch long, stayed still (playing dead?) even when I was just 2 ft away watching it. But when it finally decided to run, it was fast. It doesn’t seem like a baby field mouse or squirrel to me, what could it be? TIA

X3 agree this is a shrew. Most likely the Cinereus or Masked shrew as that is the most common. Shrews have a very high metabolic rate and must eat their own weight in food every day. Diet consists mostly of insects. Interesting animals.

Once heard a claim, if they were the size of cats, we'd be in danger.

Yes for shrew.

That they are.

My previous cat used to kill a pile of them...but never ate them. She loved mice though...

Apparently, we have 5 different shrews in Alberta; Cinereus Shrew,
Prairie Shrew,Montane Shrew, American Water Shrew, and Arctic Shrew. I've seen American Water Shrews in and around streams in the Rockies.

Oh - and shrews are not 'rodents'. Rodents have chisel like teeth, while shrews have sharp, pointy, predator teeth. Their closest relatives are non-rodents like moles and hedgehogs.
