Default CalgaryChef gave a great abswer.

I don't freeze dry, but I dehydrate and it is good. I started doing it to extend distances that kids could do back country camping and it worked out really well. I use an 80s dehydrator and then use homemade bean and goose stew.

I love that stuff for the pantry but wasn't sure how it would fare in a warm backpack for multiple days - I usually keep it in the fridge after I open it.
