Thumbs down The biggest threat to wild Pacific salmon is Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Thirty years ago, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) mismanaged the Atlantic cod fishery into near oblivion — ignoring the scientists who foresaw the collapse.

Instead, DFO rigged the science to support an unsustainable commercial fishery. Politicians vowed “never again,” and enshrined the precautionary principle into law — always err on the side of caution — but did nothing to reform the institution responsible for one of the world’s greatest self-inflicted ecological disasters.

Today, DFO does whatever is necessary to support Atlantic salmon farming along B.C.’s coast — to the significant threat of wild Pacific salmon. Only Canada allows the farming of Atlantic salmon on the migration routes of wild Pacific salmon. And, just like 30 years ago, DFO continues to rig science so it can skirt its primary duty to protect B.C.’s iconic keystone species.

Where was the BC Green Party in this debate? Nowhere?

Oh wait, before that, where was the BC Liberal Party in this debate? Nowhere?

Ok, Ok, Ok, where is the BC NDP Party in this debate? Well, I am going to guess NOWHERE.

You see, these are at least 1000 jobs at risk in BC's Fish Farming Industry, a Province with a recent history of slowly exterminating all industries such as mining, logging, etc.

You really do not believe that the local BC politicians care about the BC Wild Salmon returns, and the commercial and recreational Salmon Fishing Industry, do you? If they actually did, the Federal Politicians that BC elects to Ottawa would have done something about the situation long ago.

Yes, I hear you load and clear, but I am from Alberta, and my voice does not count in Ottawa anyway.

DFO is federal not provincial

Feds could care less. Just want a native fishery and the rest of us just drinking beer and watching sports

Trudeau govt just wants to shut the coast down and just have the nativesdo all the fishing commercially and eliminate the sport fishery

Citizens vote Federal, and Provincial. There are areas of shared jurisdiction, which you are overlooking, or seem to refuse to acknowledge.

In addition, Provincial issues in Federal Jurisdiction are advocated by the Provincial Governments with the Federal Government.

Now do you get the point?

As for the Migrating Salmon, they are the species that is getting sacrificed while the the Governments of all levels, including the First Nations, punt this around and refuse to tackle the issue of Atlantic Salmon farming in the areas of wild salmon migration.
