They have tried Bass with dismal results. Island Lake was the only exception but I havnčt heard of one being caught for at least 10years.

If not for stocking and species introductions there would hardly be a fishery to discuss.
this is the meat and potatoes of this issue. now I cannot speak of the north or southern alberta but iam sure most of our fisheries are basically man made, I have no problem with this .the op seems to be implying that stocking program is in jeopardy this, I feel is a grave mistake our wild stocks r basically gone. so stock the the whole province with whatever will grow any fish is a good fish ,protect wild stocks by all means bull trout, athabasca rainbow and east slope cutthroat. I feel stocking reduces pressure on wild fish

I guess I have to make it more clear what I am asking.

There have been a lot of "INTRODUCTIONS" of fish in Alberta. That means fish were brought to a new location and released. Some of these have lead to a self sustaining population of fish. No more introductions or stocking was needed. The fish reproduce in the area. This is mainly (almost totally) in streams and rivers. Like the Bow.

Then there is the "STOCKING" that occurs every year or every couple years where trout are trucked to and dumped into a lake or pond to provide "PUT AND TAKE ANGLING". The fish generally do not reproduce at all in these waterbodies.

That is the aspect I am asking about. Stocking trout into a put and take situation.

There are many many water bodies that still have their native, breeding, fish populations in them.

Cow lake is partly why I stared the thread.

It had been a barren lake with lots of bug feed in it.
It was stocked with a big bunch of rainbows and they grew like crazy and provided a very popular trout fishery. Then the whirling disease in Alberta's hatchery shut down almost all trout stocking.
Then perch got into the lake and started reproducing like crazy.
F&W stopped stocking small trout and just dumped in some big brood trout once in awhile.
Then F&W stocked pike into the lake. The pike have been reproducing and eating perch and are now providing a pretty good fishery.

Pike and perch both reproduce them selves in this lake and I reckon this is probably the best fit for this lake.

I wonder sometimes if it would be better to do something similar to this in some other lakes.

Open Creek Reservoir near Rimbey has heaps of suckers in it and the trout that they stock in it each year do not grow well with the sucker competition. I reckon pike would eat suckers and pretty soon there would be a good (naturally reproducing) pike fishery there.

Ok , once more if to the fray . living in olds I would be lucky if I could walk to a fishing hole. the shortrest stroll would be 10 odd miles, and that would be to a stocked trout pond. To get myself a near wild fish more like 20. this I find strange I can think of at least 10 bodys of water in this area I believe may sustain fish.I have 3 sizable dugouts of my own , however when I phone fisheries they tell me that I cannot naturalize these ponds even through them with perch pike or walleye, only farmed trout .surely this is an indication of the powers that be droping the ball or am I just spoiled and don t realize. hope this is an improvement on my normal grade ten grammer skills.
