Default New fly fisherman here... Hooked and need a fix

Hi there, I'm new to this side of the forum

I just went fly fishing for the first time in BC and it was a blast. Pulled dozens of cutties up, but now I'm back in Edmonton with nothing but an itch and no real idea how to solve it...

I live near Hermitage pond, and have heard of East Pitt Lake and Muir Lake for stocked trout and though I haven't tried them, I'm looking to catch some dinner.

We go fishing far North of the city for walleye and pike on spin reel... Can you fly fish for anything in those lakes? Walleye, pike, whitefish, etc? Remember I'm a beginner.

I'm scouring the forum here, but it's clear the South of the province is the place to go.

Thanks in advance guys... St. Croix has created a monster

flyfishing is very addictive. i haven't used my spincasting setup for probably 5 - 8 yrs now.

i haven't presonally flyfished for walleye or pike in a lake, but have talked to lots of people who have. sinking line and leach patterns are what they use mostly for walleye & pike and top water patterns near weed beds for pike.

there is lots of great streams for fly-fishing within 2 - 3 hrs of Edmonton. Fox Creek and Swan Hills area has some amazing grayling streams (the two big ones are Little Smoky and Freeman) while the Edson area, Hinton and down the FTR towards Robb/Cadomin area has some very good streams for a variety of species. most of the streams in this area were hit really hard 10 - 20 yrs ago, but are starting to make a comeback with the C&R and lower limit regs for this area. also Grand Cache area has a lot of amazing streams and lakes worth exploring. and lastly Rocky Mountain/Nordegg area has some real incredible river systems that give a lot of the rivers down south a real run for their money in size and quality of fish.

see if you can find Barry Mitchells Fishing the Trunk Road (not sure of exact title, but close to this) as it has lots of good info on some amazing streams and areas to explore. should be available at most fly shops.

good luck and welcome to the club

Mike

Lake whitefish are just like trout, same diet. There are a few threads on this site discussing them and if you google fly fishing for lake trout you find more info.
