Default New Gear Suggestion

Hey everyone,

I joined your community recently and am loving all the threads so far.

A friend of mine is looking to get into fly fishing and asked me to help him get set-up.

He will be doing trout fishing, more specifically streams/rivers with the occasional lake.

He spin casts with pretty light gear so I figured he would appreciate a 4 weight rod. Also the portability of a 4 piece is great for the backpacking he does.

He asked me specifically about a combo by Amundson. I do not have any knowledge on this brand and was wondering if any of you do.

His budget is around 200, so a pretty basic set-up. Any suggestions on rods/reels in this range would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Kingfisher knows quite a bit about Amundson. If he doesn't pipe up send him a PM

X2 Rob AKA Kingfisher is your man. He is a distributer and builds his own rods. You wont find a better guy to deal with.

Thanks guys.

Lustro, PM is sent to you and although it may be a bit long winded I hope it helps your friend make his decision.

If I was getting a first rod for local streams, rivers, and the odd lake I'm not sure I'd get a 4 weight. Most people around here get 6 to start, but a 5 is nice too (that was my first and works fine for what you stated). Its probably just a preference issue though.

Also think that most of the combo rigs you will find at the price point you are looking at will be 6.
