Default New Toy

My Black Friday Purchase came in today. Its a MDT ESS Chassis System for my Tikka T3 CTR 308. It was surprisingly easy to assemble. The fit and finish are excellent. I will try a post a better review after I mount a scope and shoot it a bit.

Looks good. I put one on a 223. Not sure what it does for accuracy yet but the word is that the chassis helps. Time will tell.

I see they have a new version of the ESS. Did you have a look at it?

Adjustable cheek piece, adjustable length of pull, interchangeable grip, long rail for mounting optics, free floated barrel, ECT, oh and many like the look of it as well. In the end if it's what the owner wants that's enough reason to get it imo (doesn't need to be "better").

P.S OP looks sharp.

That is an intelligent question.

It makes it better in many ways. Firstly chassis are believed to improve accuracy when compared to factory plastic stocks. The action is completely free floating. It's a very rigid platform and allows for more stability when target shooting in a prone position. The stock is adjustable for length of pull comb height and butt pad cant. This allows the shooter to get behind the firearm in as comfortable of a position as possible reducing muscle tension thus resulting in better shooting form and better accuracy.

This video shows how proper shooting position improves accuracy

Default It's not pretty

I agree that it's not pretty. It's practical for target shooting. It's not a hunting rifle.

Couldn't afford the Ruger hey Mark?

Hope it works out well for you. What optic are you going with?

Default Optic

Been going back and forth on a few choices. I have a Gen II Razor on another rifle and might move it over to this one. Then buy a Vortex Golden Eagle for that rifle or a nightforce Benchrest.

I am also thinking of just putting a Viper Gen II on it and leaving the Razor on my 6.5x47

I would love to get a Night force 7x35 or Schmidt 5x45 but that is not in the current budget.

I had a Ruger Precision and It was a nice rifle. I just seem to be in a Tikka Phase. I wonder how long it will remain a 308 before I turn it into something else, like a 6br or dasher might even do a creedmoor and use my 6.5x47 for the light bullets like the 123 scenars and do the 140 grs in the creed. I dont know, i change rifles and cartridges too often for my bank account.

I kinda miss my Burris competition scope.

Not sure if Mark is into PRS style shooting but the ESS chassis was designed with input from PRS shooters.

It has some additional functionality built into it for that as well. Just another benefit of switching over from stock configuration..

Not to mention AICS mags > Tikka mags.

Default PrS

If i were 15 yrs younger I would be all over PRS. I am not a very good shot if I am not prone or using a bench.

You should come out anyways.

Our youngest shooter was not even in his teens and our oldest are in their 60s.

We might run a couple 22 matches this year so people can get their feet wet if they want to try it at not too much cost.

Looks awesome for sure Mark.

It looks like you have a fun build happening.

I agree, the what evers are for our selves.

I know that either or of my builds are going out west for game Harvesting.

Practical is always in the hands of the own. LOL.

Very cool with a lot of excellent features. I like it. If you are looking for a good mid-range chambering, the 6 Dasher is worth some serious consideration.

That's awesome, I have the MDT TAC-21 in FDE, I love it and now want to transfer a couple of my other rifles to MDT chassis. When I sit down to shoot my MDT rifle it feels as though it was made for me.... which it was, lol
Over Christmas I'm going to swing into MDT to play with some of the chassis. I have a 8lb rifle that I want one of the chasiss' on but I need to check out the weights of the chassis. Next one I get I won't put the Skeleton stock ni as I think its too heavy but the Skeleton Carbine stock looks interesting.

I would be interested in a 22 shoot, and I’m sure my son would be as well. I don’t know much about the “sporting” side of firearms, only having done two events, Drayton Valley Rifle Rodeo and the Lethbridge benchrest memorial shoot, and a few weekly matches while in Medicine Hat. I know nothing about the rules or anything like that. Maybe you can start up a thread with what might be required for that.

Back to the original thread, I’m not totally sold on the looks, though I don’t mind it. While it’s not a “traditional hunting rifle”, it should be an accurate one. My rifle is over 12lbs already, doing this wouldn’t change the weight by much and it would still be more comfortable to shoot in most positions.
I might try and find one for me rimfire to see if I like it before I drop bigger money for the centerfire.

I paid around $1000 but I got some extra stuff. A couple pieces were 30%off. I didnt find any of the 50% off stuff.

Weight is around 3lbs for the chassis. For me the heavier the better. I wont be stalking with it. Just target shooting. Heavier means less recoil. when you are putting 50 rounds or more threw it in a day then you really appreciate less recoil.

I didnt know there was a difference. What makes then new better than the old? I did get it with the skeletonized butt stock that is adjustable, i like that feature.

Sightron is coming out with a new 4.5-24 SV series scope, it has ED glass and a sensible Mil-based FFP reticle. Also, Sightron will be offering a zero stop upgrade service for some of the S3 series scopes. Check it all out in their new catalog.

I always hear such great things about these scopes. I just never see them for sale in the retailers that I buy from. I have honestly never even looked through one.

I think the only place I saw them was at Shooting Edge but it’s been years since I’ve really looked around in there.
