Default Grouse hunting with a 22

Hi all

Please help me settle a bet. Buddy at work swears up and down he has seen it in the regs that you cannot hunt grouse with a solid projectile (.22).

I said I thought he was wrong. I've been searching the regs and cannot find any limitations on upland game bird. Only migratory.

Would someone be able to clarify this with a link to the correct regs please?

Thanks all

I'm quite sure he is confusing this with migratory but want to be sure.

I don't have a link to post but you can use a 22 to harvest grouse, however not in a archery only zone.

Default 2014 Regs, page 19

Key word here is "Migratory"...

From the regs (keywords bolded/italicized):
Quote:
GAME BIRD

It is unlawful to
1.hunt game birds during an open season for male pheasants within Designated Pheasant Release Sites after 2:00 p.m., except Saturdays.

2. possess, before it has been transported to the usual residence of the person who killed it or is prepared for immediate cooking, a game bird which does not bear evidence of sex and species. Evidence of sex and species consists of one completely feathered wing attached to the carcass of the game bird, except for Merriam's turkey for which evidence of sex and species consists of the complete head and beard attached to the carcass (click here to view Merriam's Turkey tagging instructions).

3. hunt a migratory game bird using
病 firearm loaded with a single bullet
不hot, other than non-toxic shot,
病 cross-bow
病 shotgun that is of a larger size than 10 guage.
4. hunt any game bird using
病 shotgun in which the magazine and chamber combined will hold more than three rounds of ammunition,
病 trap, or
秒ait.

You are correct , he is thinking migratory waterfowl, not upland game. I will see if I can find a set of regs and post the page number

Just adding to this:

Quote:
SPECIAL HUNTING AREAS

In WMUs 212 and 248 the hunting of game birds is only permitted with bows and arrows, cross-bows, shotguns or a falconry bird. Cross-bows cannot be used to hunt migratory birds.

In WMU 410 the hunting of game birds is permitted only with bows and arrows or a falconry bird.

The worst part about situations like this, is that not is the person clueless about the regulations, but he is trying to get other people to believe his B.S..

Not trying to hijack this, but since we are on the topic of grouse, I've gotten flack from people cuz I use a pellet gun or slingshot if I'm bow hunting to take out some grouse to stay silent and not destroy arrows. I'm just wondering what you guys think?

And not from a road with a .22.
cause we know that is how a lot of grouse are shot.

9. discharge a firearm from or cause a projectile from a firearm to pass along or across:
b) a road that is paved, oiled, graded or regularly maintained, unless
- the road is held under any active disposition under the Public Lands Act or under an order under the Surface Rights Act, or
- the person is hunting game birds with a shotgun under the authority of a licence.

Is this a test to see who reads the regs?

Congrats on your win!!

Last year shot all mine with the 17 in the head or neck. Glad I have not hit breast yet I'm sure it would make an aweful mess of that yummy meat.

My favourite way to hunt bush chickens. And don't use hollow points.

I love using a slingshot for grouse. It is a lot harder to shoot ruffed grouse with a slingshot because they are a little craftier than spruce grouse but it is effective if you are accurate. I use steel shot and aim for the neck. It works well and is fairly quiet so you wont spook deer.

Yea I found it to be a good time, I only got one with 3/8 shot this past year. Now I pack a slingshot with me everywhere. Even in the lunch box at work just incase and to get practice in!

I use shorts that are solid, if you happen to get a little low and get the top of top of the breast there is still not much waste at all.

I hate ruining a $10 arrow on a grouse too. Slingshot is the way to go! Got one with a hand thrown rock last year

Use judo points and pick your background. Also use lighting knocks. The reward is well worth the risk

Using 22 is allowed and when I fling an arrow I use judo points and old aluminum arrows that are beat up anyways

Pellet gun is a great way to get em. I killed tons as a kid with mine.

As for your arrow problem, just get plastic blunts. they work way better than judo points or snarrow heads. I like to shoot grouse in trees with them by lining their head up with the tree trunk and letting them have it. My carbon arrows at 282fps have never been damaged doing this, every once in awhile the insert will come loose and form a little gap but that is the worst I have seen in 15 years of dong this.
