Either will work fine. I personally prefer the 7mm-08, and I have taken moose with it.

What range you plan on shooting them at? What bullet (weight and type) re you planning on using?

Although I have never shot a moose with either calibers, I'm a fan of the 7mm-08 chambering. Because I enter in some local shooting matches with the 7-08 and also hunt with it, and as a reloader there are more component bullet choices in 7mm (0.284), especially match grade. I firmly believe that the 7mm-08 can do anything the .270 can but in a short action. Having said that, nothing wrong with a .270 as a hunting caliber either.

Do you handload or shoot factory ammunition?

I'd go with 7mm-08.

Potato Pawtahtoe....use either. I use a 7mm08, and wouldn't hesitate you use a .270.

270 all day long ....choices of ammo range and performance . I really think the 7-08 is getting over rated at times, great deer cartridge but that's it for me ..

Feed either the right bullet and put it in the lungs and both will be just fine.
Find a rifle that fits you and your budget and make the cartridge call after that, People tend to over thing the cartridge a rifle shoots and under think the rifle/rig in general. there are probably at least 15-20 suitable cartridges that are readily available.
Are you buying new, or borrowing a gun

You asked the question about ammo .and for once you're sorta right.. between the 7-08 and 270..The OP asked for moose application and my days say go with the 270..The 7-08 is great but needs more oomph than the case can do with the .284..The 7 RM and so on is a diff story .

For once I'm kinda right? You're funny. Now tell me how a 284 120 gr bullet at 3000 fps lacks "oomph" while a 277 130 gr bullet at the same velocity has more than enough?

This is fantastic advice. Unfortunately it will likely be ignored.

both the 270 and 7mm08 are great girls starter guns and can be found in the "Junior Miss" section of any decent sporting goods store, just ask for a step-stool to see over the gun counter.
who cares what other people think about your 'cutesy' calibers as long your secure with that lifestyle choice.
Any hairy-chested hunter/gather knows it has say MAGNUM before anything dies!!

The moose can't tell the difference, I promise. Ordinarily I'd say to decide based on ammo availability if you don't handload... but how do you judge that these days? I can't get the ammo I want in 30-06 for goodness sake.

But a magnum WILL bleed them out faster when you shoot them in the leg.

One could argue the Sectional Density of a 130 gr .277 cal bullet being .241 beats the 120 gr .284 cal's sectional density of .213.
I'm no pro, but a nice high SD will help a lot in bringing down Large Game.
The .270 win gets my vote between the 2. The 30-06 parent case of the .270 has 17.6% more case capacity that the 308 parent case of the 7-08.
I will admit I am a bit biased to the .270 being that it's my hunting cartridge.

I often wonder how people manage to kill animals larger than squirrels with a muzzle loader, or even a 30-30.
I've killed moose, elk, and deer with a .308, I've killed moose, elk, and deer with a .280, I've only ever killed deer with a 300mag, but I'd bet it'll kill moose and elk too.
My brother in law used to hunt moose and deer with a .243, killed a pile of them with no complaints or worries. Although I own all of the calibers listed on my post, I'll be hunting elk and deer with a 120gr bullet coming out of my .260 this fall. My only worry is freezer space.

I know 4 moose that found the 7-08 highly effective.

If sectional density actually meant anything then maybe.

A few moose, a few elk, at moderate ranges, the 7mm08 worked just great and that was with 140grn Fusions,
now there are calibers that would have killed them DEADER than dead !
but just dead was fine with me
