Instant hot sandwich

Anyone old enough to remember the hot sandwiches in a bag from the 70's and 80's? Plastic bag, place in boiling water for a minute or two then BAM
instant hot sandwich. They came in roast beef , chicken and turkey for sure, not sure what others there were. Why did they stop making them?
You can still get the pastrami ones at Costco but not the same, no gravy.
Anyone know if these are still available?
Mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Not to be a Negative Nelly, but I prefer hot sandwiches that are cooked on a cast iron skillet with butter. I'm sure that the sandwich in your memories is quite efficient and convenient to prepare.

Sounds like you have never tried one. They would be great for a hunting/camping trip or even at home. They where delicious. Suppose you could make your own, think I may try it.

A bachelor's best friend downed a lot of these back then, I miss those Smedleys beef steak and kidney pies in cans too.

It definitely would work as a camp food that could last for a couple of initial days! The plastic bags would be convenient to carry out as garbage as well.
I just might give this a try regardless of the fact that I've always preferred a crunchy crust on my hot sandwiches to the soft "steamed" bread.

Hey Grouse, the bread didn't come in the bag. You supply your own, even toast it if you like. Was just easy and convenient at the time. Price was good also. Don't know why they stopped making them. I know it wasn't home made but better than peanut butter and jam sandwiches if you were lazy like me.

These things were also frozen so if you kept them cold they lasted a while.

Im a bit suspicious about plastics chemical stability when heated is the only thing.

We package our own in single serve flat cryovac packages for quick weekday meals or snacks.
Turkey and gravy
Roast Beef and Gravy
Ham with Hot Horseradish Gravy
Chicken in Buttermilk Gravy

Yup, but then one day I read the contents listing - some meat (made in a factory), plus A WHOLE Lot O' Chemicals!

I started to make my own after that.

With all the cheap vac sealers available today why not just make your own? Ive been doing it for years with left over pulled pork and poultry.
