Default Miette River, Jasper National Park

Went up to Jasper National Park for a night this passing weekend. Dropped the gf off in town to do some shopping and I went over to the Miette River to catch some nice little brook trout.

First I tried where the Miette enters the Athabasca. Caught a little brookie on a yellow foam hopper, and I think I hooked into a grayling maybe, but it slipped off my hook before I could pull him out.

Then I fished right off the 16 just downstream of the bridge. There was a really deep hole with some boulders in it. First cast out a big orange chernobyl ant. Two hits on my first two casts, but the chernobyl was a little too big for the fish to swallow I think, and I pulled it right out of the fish's mouth each time. Tried a few more flies (had lost my yellow hopper by then), but finally, a big black foam ant with lots of wiggly legs did the trick. Pulled out two little brookies in two casts. Told my girl she better keep shopping cause I was catching fish, haha. Casted a bit more and pulled out a nice little eight incher.

This is Miette River where it meets the Athabasca. The Miette is green and the Athabasca is silvery white from silt. The two dont mix and the sinuouy line stretches out for a mile...

Nice report and pictures, mountains streams are great. Those two fish are actually Juvenile rainbows. I don't know if there's been any stocking that far up, but if there hasn't then those would be Native Athabasca rainbows!

I wouldn't guess that these are Athabasca rainbows. There has been lots of stocking of rainbows in the Park over the years and thus most fish caught in the Athabasca would be from stocked population.

I'm not so great at identifying trout yet, but the guy in the sports shop told me I would mostly find brookies and bulls where I was fishing, and I know they're not bulls.

Just went and checked a trout id guide. Since they're missing the white leading edge they can't be brookies eh? Oh well, I still had just as much fun catching them.

Either way, they were fiesty little guys, leaping two feet clear out of the water.

I thought the Athabasca Rainbows were supposed to be pale with little or no spots?

I fished there as well this weekend and the weekend before as well on my way though when I was salmon fishing in Northern BC.

I fished right off highway 16 about 4 or 5 kilometers from Jasper. I caught a couple of small rainbows and a little bull trout and one small brookie. I only fished for 20 minutes so it was pretty nice. I would love to go there again sometime and get some more use from my national park license.
