what quality of animals are in wainwright? what tags are available? what priority to get drawn? any info will help, thanks

Camp Wain is a great place to hunt.
I have been there 2 times now and I STILL havent seen all of it

As for how long it takes to get drawn.

Its a fun hunt no doubt.....lots of cool country, lots of guys to meet and chat with, and you can pretty much hunt however you want and whatever style suits you the best.

Cant wait to go again......

Yep there are elk there too.....it can be hit or miss though.....

where are the fn elk?

2005, i got my cowelk (on camera) on opening morning 0930hrs out of a herd of a 100 sows, cubs and boars saw about 130 totalled in the 12 days we hunted there.
my bro and i got moose was on second last day. 49"er on camera kill.
my boy shared on of my deer draws, i got no deer nor did my brother

I have been to camp wainright five times,once for moose and four times for deer.The deer numbers and quality are good and the moose quality is excellent.I took a 54" bull on my moose hunt.

Camp Wainwright is certainly a unique hunting experience becuz of the location (military training base) and the way the hunt is run ,,,,125- 150 hunters all more or less checking in and out at the same time lets you see the day's trophies and swap a lot of hunting stories!

I first hunted the base back in 1977 and have been back probably about 10 times (for deer) since. I go during the primitive weapons season and it takes on average three years to get drawn again. I do believe the first rifle season takes 4 or 5 years.

As a deer location, most years, it's a good place to hunt, (generally lots of good heads), but the fact is there are better (numbers wise) and easier locations for deer in the parkland and prairie zones. Moose are reasonably common and there are definately some big'uns! I have yet to even see an elk on the base.

All in all, I'll keep going back cuz it is a neat place to hunt!

Wow some great moose. Really gets me thinking if I should use my moose points there down the road - currently at a 4.

Ya it takes about an 8-9....but they are amazing moose in there. We saw a bull that would easily go 54-56" with giant fronts on him. We saw over 25 bulls on our hunt I'd bet.
Talked to a buddy about a moose trip next year......we should chat. It would be an interesting trip. I may save Kim for Wainwright though.....as its an easy area to get around and find moose....

Its a fun hunt no doubt in there...

when you are drawn for deer in wainwright, what do you get for tags? mulie wt both, either? not sure how it works.

All of this is listed in the draw books...

You get 2 either sex/either species tags......

I think its a great place to hunt as well, and with the CWD situation nearby, I would use any priority that you may be building in there sooner than later because it could affect things in a very negative way.

Here's my Wainwright Bull from a couple years ago. I took me about 15 attempts to get this picture because I was by myself when I shot him. What a job it was to dress and load!

Chet, what did you end up doing with his head? Horn mount? Head Mount? European? Great bull, that must have been a pile of work, a moose is a great deal of work for 2-3 guys.....
My next bull no matter what size he is will be a european, I think they look cool.

I can only imagine the energy it took to dress and clean that bull moose by yourself.My partner and I dropped two moose within 50 feet of each other and it took us 4 hours to cape and dress one bull,dress the other and get them both into the truck.Thankfully we were able to drive the truck right up to one and within 50 feet of the other bull.The two moose were certainly a load for my short box 1/2 ton as well.As tired as we were after the ordeal,you must have really been exhausted.

I can definately imagine it. A few years ago I was hunting alone and shot a decent bull. I made a few calls on the cell phone looking for some help, but everyone was "at work". Luckily I could drive right to it but it was still five in the afternoon before I was done (shot it at nine), totally exhausted. I swore that's the last time I would shoot a moose on a Tuesday.

I guided a hunter to a 52" bull in BC....he dumped it in a shallow swamp, about a foot of water. He was an older guy and couldnt do much work on the moose. Got in there for pics and helped me tie one leg to a bit of bush, and the rest was up to me...

Anyone who thinks moose are easy to work on by yourself really should experience it once....its a humbling experience....lol...makes you cherish ones that are close to the truck and makes you cherish hunting buddies even more....

Ya it reminds me of my last bull - a decent 42"er. 61A and crestliner where in the area in the morning but headed back to Edmonton to watch the Grey Cup. Shot it about 200 yrds from the ANC haul road at 2:00pm. He died lying across a big log in a clearing and I couldn't budge him. Had to field dress him on his side. I knocked him in half thinking I could roll the halves 1 at a time onto my sled(plastic calf sled). NOPE could move the load - ended up busting the bull into 6 peices. Slid 4 peices out and into the truck by well after dark and had to leave the rest till morning. Not 1 guy going by even offered to help me load even 1 of the peices into the truck. NEVER hunting moose alone again!! But he sure ate good!

Cowboy Al, I boiled and cleaned the skull and it turned out pretty good.

Several pieces are the only way to go when you're by yourself with a Moose. I had several people stop and offer to help me but since I could get my truck pretty close and I had all day I told them to keep hunting. I didn't want to use up someone else's time when most of them were only there for three days to hunt deer.

I was definately exhausted. I had to sneak in to my hotel room in Wainwright to get cleaned up because I looked like I had been dipped in Spagetti sauce. It was a great way to end the season that year.
