Default Hi Ho...Hi Ho...it is off to net perch I go!

Just got back from DisneyWorld. Saw gators, snapping turtles and largemouth bass oh my....

Still I while I did not have a chance to fish for them I was able to see a shuttle launch. Totally awesome!

Anyways...the ice just came off our lake completely on Wednesday April 7, 2010. Last year was April 30, 2009. We did seem to have less ice this year.

So the plan is to start netting again ASAP as I have a renewed Fish Research Licence. I just need some warm blooded guys to start us off by setting the fyke nets. I might start off netting on Sat, Sun mornings and Wed evenings...but thinking just starting off with a 7 day set may also be in the cards if the weather stays cold.

Also my research has shown that female perch do not like to go into fish traps. Are female perch smarter than male perch?

Anyways...I am calling for volunteers. Any volunteers will share in the perch caught. I will post the exact date and time later on after I double check the weather...so please watch for it.

No need to respond at this time.

Cheers

Sun

Not responding either . . . but am wondering what is involved in the operation of a fyke net. Can a warm blooded female assist, or are we not tough enough?

I think you've met Jinx, Kevin, so think about it before you answer that one (For those of you who haven't met our Jinx yet . . . she's one tough lady!)

You can easily do it, it's not that bad except you can get really wet so it's not great on a cold day.

This is not some "girls gone wild...netting perch" video people.

This is a wholesome family community.

You folks are scaring me

If I can find a person to help me set the nets tonight...we should be good for a pull this weekend.

Stay tuned.

4 fyke nets set tonight. I will post either request for volunteers for Sat or Sun... I am just going to see how the weather plays out tomorrow.

We are 3 weeks earlier than last year so I am curious how the netting will go. If I get enough interest I may try a Sat and Sun pull.

Cheers

Default How to Fyke?

Morning,
I'm way to far away to come help unfortunately, so I was hoping you could explain how you use these Fyke nets, as the search I did didn't find any thing to clear on how you get the fish into them.
Thanx for your time and good luck, if I ever am down south when your netting, I would LOVE to see and help with this process and meet a few folks from the board.
Good luck
Ken

Fish swim into an opening and progressively move deeper and deeper into the net. It is a funnel system shaped to let fish get in easy...but harder to get out.

oilngas. I decided we will pull the nets at 10 am tomorrow morning. Weather is looking grand. A couple of guys with waders will be handy as the water is cold. Bring bags and buckets to take perch home with.

Just so everyone is aware...while we caught a ton of perch last Spring...I am not sure what our catch rate will be this year. We may have done significant damage to the population last year and last winter. We may be too early in the Spawn (we are netting 3 weeks earlier). Also our large stocked rainbows last year may have scared the perch into deeper water.

I will consider keeping a couple guys around and try gill netting but I think my net is too small...but would be worth trying.

I will go. I can bring waders and two large buckets. I just need to know where to be.
