CBSA and Canada Post at it again
So I have a $470 pair of Italian boots enroute from the US. Here is the taxes and duty I’m now owing. How in the world is this calculated? Who in the world do I contact about this? It’s insane.

First they convert the price to CDN, so x130%, then they charge duty, about 20% most countries , if the boots were not made in the States or some other Free Trade/duty exempt location. Finally they charge 5% GST on that total and a $10 handling fee.

Yeah man... That is not actually out to lunch at all for something from Italy. Even if the boots were brought in to a Canadian store for purchase, that would have been added to them as well and then the store will put them up for sale after the fact with that calculated into cost.

This is almost exactly $100 more than the exact same order 2 months ago. And duty and taxes were charged.

You might have gotten lucky before and it escaped notice but I know when I have brought stuff in from Europe for my business at similar values it was not a lot different using my actual brokerage agent...

It didn’t escape notice. I was charged duty and taxes on the previous parcel. And both were bought in the USA from the same vendor.

I just did a quick search on duties from Italian manufacturers and this is what I found....
Quote:
Duties range anywhere from 0% to 17%, with the general tax averaging 4.2%. However, foodstuffs (particularly dairy products), textiles and clothing still have quotas and higher tariffs.
|
Boots would be considered textiles and clothing.
I didn't mean to say that it escaped notice overall... Just that it may have not been calculated properly the first time and you got lucky. It happens.

You have to dispute it if you want through CBSA. If you read more on the canada post site where you pay duty they will tell you it.
Don't forget you have a $10 surcharge in there for canada post doing the duty for you.
Your customs slip will say exactly what they classified your boots under as well. If you don't agree, fill out the appropriate form.
