Default I tot I saw a puddy tat. THEN success!!!!!

My hunting partner and I went on an elk hunt on Tuesday morning. It was quite the morning.
Part 1 As soon as it was light enough to see, we did a few quiet cow calls to see if anything was close. After a few minutes made some louder calls and had a bull respond to the west of us. We stayed there for close to half an hour and the bull never came in but kept bugling. We started heading west towards him, and went about a half a mile before we got close to him. We figured he was within 100 yrds but still couldn't see him, so we kept moving in. All of sudden the herd bolted southwest. The wind was right, we were sure they didn't see us, so we kept easing our way to the west. (this whole time there is another bull bugling to the north of us) As we stood there figuring out our next move some movement caught our eye to the south. It was a cougar. He was just sitting there no more then 50 yards from us. Creepy!! I dug my video camera out and got a couple of minutes of footage of him. He never moved until we tried moving a little to get a different angle. He just disappeared.
part 2 With those elk gone we headed north towards the bull to the north. Once across the cut block, John moved up to the edge of the tree line and I stayed in the regrowth and set up the Montana Decoy and made a cow call. The bull responded instantly and was coming in hard. He went by John at about 50 yards and didn't give him a shot. The bull come around to the west of me and was coming straight for the decoy. He was 55 yards when something spooked him. I think he ended up straight to the side of the decoy and he lost sight of it. Sooooo, in the mean time another bull started bugling to the northeast of us.
Part 3 Headed for bull #3. Got to where we thought we were close, let out a cow call, and he was no more then a 100 yards. John had just enough time to nock an arrow, and get 10 yards off the cut line and the bull was right there. John made a 17 yard shot on him as he was walking by. I didn't get the video camera up in time for the shot but got a bit of the bull as he stood for a minute, then bolted a short distance and then fell over. he only went 42 yards. John made a perfect double lung shot.
This is John's first bow kill so he was pretty damn excited!!!!!!!!

Here is a couple pics

Great story. Perseverence pays off. I hope I look that happy when I arrow my first elk. Congrats

Did the cat sighting have you looking over your shoulders and thinking twice about cow calls at all?

It made us look over our shoulders while we were walking across the cut block. After that we ere into another elk again and we forgot all about the cat.

Great story and a nice elk. I was out this morning and didn't hear a thing, I haven't heard an elk around Hinton yet. Must be very exciting to see a cougar and shoot an elk with a bow in the same day! Nice work guys... can you post the video somehow?

Good tenacity guys.
Congratulations.
Don't go sitting in a ground blind up their calling or you might have company.
