I have been told to watch for the first few dadelion heads open up, and the morels should not be far behind.
I only know where to pick up north, wish I knew where in Calgary or area would be good, it would save me the 5 hour drive.
a couple more weeks and away we go!!!!!!!

Default morel mushrooms

Found a hat full yesterday, looks like they are just getting started, the next week should be good. Didn't get a chance for pics as it was the end of the day and was getting short for time. With some rain and then this heat again and it will be a great year.

For any people in the Calgary area interested in a foray for Bolette & Rybc around Spray Lakes,, drop me a line mid July. I'll be doing an early scout and then post my findings. It's nice to go in a group, especially with all the furry beasties about when one is staring at the ground all day. Last year the Bolletes and Rybc (I'll get the Latin names up later) were very abundant and seriously the Bolettes were like eating firm butter. Sorry for the hijack.

A good mushroom app for the iPhone - wild mushrooms of north America and Europe by rodger Phillips- 2400 photos of over 1550 mushrooms. It was only a 1.99. I'm not a novice picker but it has alot of info. Ill be looking this week in the elk river area. I will let you know what I find. it was still pretty wet in the bush when I left last week so the warm weather should bring a bumper crop.

So with this little bit of rain down here in Calgary, would it be a good time to try this weekend for morels around here? I didn't manage to get out last weekend but will try this long weekend.

We might be going to Drumheller area on the weekend though, do morels exist around that area or is it too dry?

So we went out to a place near Calgary and managed to find a few false morels but no true morels. It's a little dry still so we're hoping for some more rain and try the spots again.

Does anyone know if the false morels grow in the same type of areas as true morels?

Default True morels

Yes, they should come up after the false (early morels ), just need some rain then heat to get them going. The Verpas ( false morels ) here are just finnishing up, picked 3 pails full over the last 4 days, so hoping for rain today to get the yummy black morels going.
