Default Upper K Lake

Hi all:

I am doing a 3 day/2 night backpacking trip in the upper K lake area and packing in all that I need to be there for the trip. I won't have a ton of space for fishing gear, but I am going to take in my fly rod with some flies, bit of tippet etc. not like my normal gear preparation (vest/back pack/many fly cases etc.). So trying to go as minimal as possible, taking my 4 pc 4 wt (or would you recommend a 6 wt), and a few flies in my rod case. What dries/nymphs are working right now on upper K?

Thanks

I'd take the 6wt, also gives you the opportunity to fish for bulls

try small orange nymphs, not sure what dries would work.

for bulls throw big white streamers

Micro leeches in brown, green and black. Nymph them under an indicator.

100' from the boat launch. 15' depth 12' off of shore. Tie each leech 12" apart. If the start hitting one colour of the others then switch em up. Don't take bananas and wear sunscreen.

Are you actually getting away from the Upper lake, - aster, three isle, maude? Trout up at those lakes aren't picky, though Aster is usually very cloudy/muddy.

I lol'd hard on this one. You sir have won an all inclusive guided walleye trip to lake x. You'll have to run the sunscreen into my back though.

I think it took 3.5-4 last time I was up there with overnight and light climbing gear. Water levels at hidden lake were good too.

Leeches, as was stated earlier, Chironomids and just about anything bright orange as cutties love it! A 6 wt will be just fine.

We aren't going to have an opportunity to unfortunately. Will be very close to where the Kananaskis river flows into the lake. Staying at the point campground. Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. Would love to get to Three Isle someday.

Three Isle and Aster would be frozen still.......remember its only early june. I have had good results in the corner of upper K lake just before the forks campground. Depending on water levels you can jump from the rocks near the shore there and fish too. Beautiful place to camp

Never heard about these hike in lakes in particular but did here some late ice off lakes in the higher tudes are actually ice off way earlier than the norm.

Good luck in k country! A six wt is preferable

If you hike to an inflow you Will likely be pleased. Do u have a float tube?

Bring BEAR SPRAY! Do not go with out.

It was a good trip in and out. Didn't catch much on Upper K, only got to fish for about 30 min at 6:30 in the morning, but did go and hit up a couple of ponds on my way home for fun and caught a few. Such beautiful country, I was just content to sit and look at the scenery.....a fish out there would have been a bonus. One more quick question, has anyone fished the river above the upper Kananaskis falls? Around the forks campground? Any luck? I would love to get back in there again with my rod this time.

Hey I fish that back area once in awhile but I Want to go up the river to the falls one day. LEt me know when youre going again and we can go together. I have a powerboat and I can get us across the lake quickly. IF it sucks we can go elsewhere on the lake with the boat. LEt me know.
Cheers
