Default Hurry kids help me lift this fish

Couldn’t sleep so out a went at 6:00am on the shortest day of the year. drilling holes sorry if I woke anyone up. It was my first time out on this lake this season and it was dark so I walked out to be safe. Decided to try my new lindy glow streak clown. Jigged for while marked what was probably some fingerling perch. Smaller than my lure in the flasher. Just as I could start to see I had a good hit and the fish look off running a really good run but it spit the lure, I Figured shucks that felt like a good one. A little Over an hour later the kids and grandpa came out to see how fishing was as they pulled away to take the dog for a run. Kaboom my poor little ugly stick bent end for end and the battle was on. I know this is going to be a issue solo so I’m yipping and yelping mostly in excitement and trying to get the kids attention so I could get some help quick. Just as they realize something is wrong with dad and drive over I get this pike to the hole but it’s sideways so everyone is looking down the hole as I am maneuvering the line around to try get the fish vertical and up comes a mouth that could swallow a watermelon kids pretty much fall backwards. With adrenaline pumping I put my whole hand right into the mouth of this T Rex and pull him up. My measuring board is 40” and he was just longer than the board and REAL fat. My personal best Canadian caught fish. Couple quick pictures and the big pig king of the pike swam off to swallow up whatever he wants down there.

I'm guessing happy you didn't drill with a 6" hand auger. A good trick to save your hand: shove your glove in its mouth. She may grab on and save you a few gashes.

Wow what a hog!! Pike fishing is my go to but usually not until March rolls around. I’m guessing that one is for sure 25+ lbs. I’m thinking closer to 30lbs.

Congrats, a real beauty pike there. Looks healthy, fins are not red like it's been too stressed - looks like a healthy capture and release - this one is likely to live another day and let someone else enjoy it as much as you and your kids did !!!

Excellent job.

Red fins reflect a stressed fish? That’s and interesting fact

I think our learned colleague is referring to the red hue on the lower face and pectoral fins of a stressed Walleye. Very common on boxed live fish. Not so much on Northerns in +1 Celsius water.

Fishing for giant pike with my father was my foundation for a lifetime of angling, always on the hunt for the big one. You've sent your sons on a path not unlike my own and you should be proud to be a part of that dream.

Well done.
