lure mold
Hello all,
This is likely a long shot question but i figure it's worth the asking.
Has anyone on here had any experience with creating your own mold to allow you to cast your own lures?
There a lure that is no longer made commercially and I was thinking it could be done much like Jigheads or bullets are cast.
Thank-you

I was pondering that myself lately. I have 2 CNC's and I would like to utilize them to make mashup my two hobbies!
I could cut the negative into two halves of the wood and make a mold.
Or perhaps use a cnc mill to create rapala's

I've made a few over the past two years. Just with a clay master I made and then pouring silicone rubber. Working on a new one.
A CNC would be so fun to play around with for making lures.

I have cast lead things like large keel sinkers, decoy weights and the like in molds carved from wood. Hard wood works best and will last for several castings before it splits or whatever. Also, I made a mold from plaster of Paris to cast 4" diameter downrigger balls (about 10 lb). I think I got 4 before it cracked apart. If heat is not involved you can make a mold from Bondo: I have made a mold using Bondo to form duck decoy bodies and heads by pouring in urethane foam (the stuff taxidermists use to form deer heads, etc.). Made many dozen decoys and the molds are still good. You can vary the density of the final product by varying the amount of foaming liquid put into the mold: from a light foam to as dense as wood.

What is the lure made of?, do you still have an example?
I have made molds for pouring soft plastics out of silicone. Mold silicon is not cheap, but the molds you can make are pretty involved. you should be able to replicate just about any wood or plastic lure.
there are mold silicones that can handle lead but that is about it.
here is an example.

I have seen some interesting youtubes about smelting used bullet casings and casting them with a lost strafoam type method?

Jet very nice work. I would be very interested in making set up like yours, of course if you don't mind sharing your secrets. Can you post pictures of your mould for wobble jig? Haw do you use fluid beads for painting and haw did you make fluid beads?
Thanks

Thank you very much for sharing. I'm going to order some powder paints and gave a try. I'm familiar with casting so this part is no problem for me but I would like to try make wobble jig slightly wider and more round shape. I wander if there is enough material on this wobble jig from factory mould so they can be flatten up on the edges to create wider body.

I've made a mold on a VMC at work a couple years ago. It's a 6"+ crayfish thing so pouring just wasn't easy in one solid pour. Now it's been sitting in my toolbox waiting for me to adjust the mold into an injection type. One day I'll have time.

molds
One thing i should have mentioned, these lures were originally stamped from brass, they aren't a plastic or rubber body.

I have used a number of different but mainly balsa , basswood and poplar. I like basswood the best so far. Easy to work with but not so soft that you can make a mistake with just sand paper.
Yes I have made the multi axix turner it pretty simple but I used a salvaged lazy Susan bearing , I recommend using a good one. The clamps are fantastic painting and clear coating are much simpler . I am up to 15 or so and I still want to make more
Rattles are going in the next batch though if I can figure out how to make some beefy enough, those 8" grandmas are just screaming for one or two each
At some point soon I will try the various plastics that are usable for carving I have some PVC foam board I would use for the lipless in the picture instead of balsa. I also have some PVC trim board it has similar density to balsa. and PVC deck board is about the same as poplar . with UV cured clear coat you could carve and fish a lure in the same day.
With access to a cnc do you have any interest in soft plastics
