Default Recommendation on single shot 22LR

I am looking for a relatively light single shot 22LR with open sights for my son.

Only one that has caught my attention is the CZ452 Scout.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

You cant beat the scout as it is single shot for learning and will take a 5 shot magazine (may even be included) when they are ready to move on. So impressed I have been looking for a good used one for a couple years for my grandson but it is rare they come up.

Default cz 452 scout

CZ 452 Scout, we have 2 of them, deadly accurate, come with a single shot magazine adapter, but you can use a higher capacity magazine when you chose to, 12" length of pull for a smaller shooter, but I use a slip on recoil pad when I shoot. Nice smooth mini Mauser type action. Need 11mm dovetail rings if you instal a scope. Highly recommend this little rifle, your grandson will be passing it down to his grandson.

Marlin and Savage both make good single shots. You can get the Savage with the Accu-Trigger in single shot.

If you want used, there are lots of Anschutz single shots for very good prices and you can't beat them for great triggers, accuracy or longevity. An old Cooey model 39 is also a great learning gun but have a real heavy trigger pull that is not adjustable.

I have a CZ, though not a Scout. That adapter is a great idea! Good for both the beginner and experienced shooter.

Chiappa Little Badger

Lightweight, handy, excellent trigger on mine. Adjustable ghost ring sight. $170 and 3 pounds, folds in half. Very accurate gun for the simplicity of it. If you take the bottom rail off, it can fold tighter and can fit easily into a cargo pants pocket and the hinge is perfectly at your belt for a little tie string to secure it from wobbling on a hike. I attached a detachable magazine to the side of the action and that holds my shells for very handy access for my next shot.

If you want a straight single shot in a classic kids .22 look for a chipmunk. Or for the new age synthetic Henry has a great stainless bolt with fiber front and rear iron sights. I own both for my kids. Great little guns

I thought those T/C's were pretty neat little rifles.
My brother started his boys on the savage rascal because it's cock on opening.

What model of Anschutz with open sights do you recommend that is light weight? I rather buy Anschutz than anything else.

There are a number of models, here is a list. You are looking for the 64 action. They are long lasting accurate but quite a bit cheaper than the 54 actions. Check CGN and AO as well as Tradex for used ones.

There are also a fair number of Savage/Anschutz rifles around. These were made by Anschutz and are exact copies of the European versions just shipped here marked Savage/Anschutz.

The 180 and 190 C.I.L. rifles are excellent deals if you can find them.
the 190 had a match rifle stock and some series had slightly heavier barrels.
the 121, 125 and 127 rifles are a cheaper action.

the 310 is also a very good rifle , a 64 action that is a repeater.

^great advice.

Depending on how small your kid is...there are a few options. If he's very small/young, a Savage Rascal is a great choice. My kids have all outgrown ours, but they won't let me sell it. Accurate, reliable, lots of great memories. Ours doesn't always eject the empties, but extracts 100% of the time.

Cooey 39~another good choice, but the cocking knob is small and takes a surprising amount of effort to pull back. My kids never warmed-up to it.

Anschutz~I have a model 1450 I bought over 25 years ago, and it's one of my favorite guns. Youth-sized (Cooey 39-ish) , will take 5/10 round mags and I do have a single-shot adapter for it. Unfortunately, I think I've only seen 1 or 2 for sale used since.

CZ452 Scout~this is the winner, and while I have a 452 Varmint and a BRNO 2E (identical to a 452 LUX) I still want a Scout "just because". Great guns.
