Default pine coulee walleye what you guys think?

ok so i was jut thinking one of these years they must be planning to allow walleye to be kept i myself believe they should because of a few reasons 1 it might allow us non boat anglers to catch more pike off the dock not just the odd one and i know that its a great fishery to keep the young and new anglers occupied but if we were to say allow a few walleye to be kept for a few seasons then after 1-3 seasons of that we could close it off till the population comes back but to me this is only one angler view so what do you fellow anglers think

I like the idea, but I think that you might be surprised at how fast the walleye population would get hammered if you could keep from this lake. Even having a few days a year where each angler could keep one, would be cool. They could advertise these specific days the same way that they do the free fishing days.

Pine Coulee is a tough place for anything but slew sharks to get a foothold. We need a few more years to get the habitat established before the fishery gets "opened". Don't forget, there are guys who keep fish regardless of the circumstance.

look at how the burbot are exploited in that lake and then ask how long it would take for the walleye to disappear.

This is a very young water body.

Lets think of managing the fishery on a time scale of decades, not seasons.

Beeguy is correct, this reservoir is a very young body of water. Its not yet stabilized. Most fisherpeople on here are very impatient, fishing will improve.

I would go out there just to witness the hundreds if not thousands of people that would be there those couple days becasue they could keep a couple easily caught walleyes... Opening that lake to a harvest is a bad idea, it would be fished out in no time.

You could probably run a bus charter down there from Calgary until the last one was caught.

I really don't see where everyone thinks the burbot are being exploited at PCR

During the week there is little if any fisherman and on the weekend you might find 15 tents set up.

Big deal. It is a very large lake and the fish are not just around the boat dock or bridge where 90% seem to set up.

Walleye is different, it needs to be given many years, even Crawling Valley still does not allow harvest of walley.

They need to put some forage feed in for the eyes before they allow you to keep any. Eyes can only get so big on bugs.

If you can't see it you're pretty blind. Likely the busiest non-put and take in southern Alberta. When the fish stack up to spawn and you can keep 10 it does diminish the lake wide population. For the record, well over 50 trucks out last time i drove by. Its managed only for walleye, everything else is highly exploited.

Instant can of worms if they opened it up to allowing people to keep some. There is no art to fishing in PCR. Grab a rod, put some bait on, throw in lake, catch walleye instantly because they are so hungry. Repeat several thousand times and presto you have an empty swimming hole instead of a fishery. My thoughts only but IMO they really screwed up on that lake by not introducing a bait species for the walleye to eat. The pike are just stupid big after the short period of time that the lake has been in existance but thats because they dine on undersized walleye daily.

It does have forage (shiners, chub, suckers), it was simply stocked with walleye too soon for the forage base to really build up. Perch or something similar would be really difficult to establish now (too many walleye) but would have potential to help. The only way perch are getting there is via the bucket brigade though, very little interest in the government having another species to manage.

Burbot reach sexual maturity between 4 and 7 years of age.

Lets limit the burbot ASAP

This is so true, just trout and walleye seem to count in this province. As a matter of fact if you look up the minutes from the last "Alberta Fisheries Management Round Table meeting" from just a couple of months ago Walleye are mentioned 14 times, trout nine times, pike once, whitefish once, perch zero.

Sure appears to be walleye and trout biased management to me.

What do you think almost everyone fishes for in this province?

Whitefish and perch fisherman are the minority. They only get fished heavily in the winter
