Hunted snows a lot in Sask many years ago. Continue to hunt birds back in Sask every fall. White geese drove me crazy!! But it was so addicting when it worked. Now I’m in Calgary and looking to connect with someone or more than 1 person or group that would be willing to join up. More than happy to scout, call farmers, knock on doors, split gas…whatever it takes. Happy to trade fishing in the boat for the lucky winners. Lol.
I have a keen 12 year old that is my number me priority as I don’t even need to pull the trigger. Just want to see him learn and smile and appreciate the great sport of waterfowl the right way. Oh….and I have a 1 year old lab that is coming along very nicely. Really want to see her get her feet wet while the fire is hot. I know it’s real hard to connect with the right crew and a lot of people have their groups set but thought I would give it a go……you never know who might read this and love fishing. Haha.

I continue to head to Sask every Oct for the month. I find about 90% willing to permise, while in Alta it’s only about 20%.

Awe man I wish I could spend all October there too…unfortunately we only can fit in an annual Thanksgiving trip which involves a couple days of goose hunting. My son is super pumped for it this year as he is now legal in the whole country. Can’t wait to sit back and watch his eyes when those first few flocks lock up. Brings back so many fun memories. That’s why I am trying to find something a bit more local this spring to keep the interest level real high. Hoping someone reads this and wants to set up a call or a coffee…

Here's a link to a Montana lake where they count migratory birds. It sits about 200 KM south of Coutts.

https://mtfwp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/M...9b447fa2811107

They have a snow goose daily count overlaid on a yearly average graph.

Short answer is the birds are late this year......

The lakes around Taber are frozen solid still. And with the forecast I can’t see them being open anytime soon. I saw some swans this morning sitting on a frozen lake.

Saw my first pair of Canada's today. They were eating brown grass on the side of Calgary Trail lol.
It was exactly 3 weeks after that happened last year when the snows started coming.

That is why I carry a cordless drill with a bit the same size as my stakes. Only takes a couple seconds to get past the frost and punch a hole deep enough to hold a decoy. Stakes in one hand, drill in the other and partner(s) following along with a couple handfuls of decoys each. You're set up in no time at all.

They better take their time coming north, it's -18 here this morning and for the next 10 days we do not show one day with a + temp, April 8 is the first day and for a couple days it shows +1 and +2 not a speck of open water anywhere around here. Was out in the pasture calling coyotes on Saturday and there is still knee deep snow in most places, spring is slow, did see a few gophers out running around on top of the snow.

Thanks for the pics. I guess they don't care about temperature.
When it's time, it's time.

There isn't even sheet water up here yet. lol

Most things in nature are triggered by daylight hours, not weather, so they sometimes run into surprises. The local rabbits are already turning brown.

Totally agree, but waterfowl require open water. I would have thought 2ft of ice would have been a factor. lol

I wonder how far they're going to roost?
I know any goose around here is either on a settling pond, or the river.

Wow that was a surprise- I saw 4 pairs of Canada’s flying over my house last evening! No idea where they are going to roost since our pond is frozen solid!

Default Snow Geese

Snows don't much care about open water in the spring in this area anyway, it's all about the feed. If they can get some food they will stay until the weather changes, it's not uncommon to see 10-15,000 hanging out on the ice until its time to go.

Default Snows

Just saw a flock of about 25 snows flying over Okotoks into a north wind. Was watching them then they suddenly changed course and flew back south east.

Ha silly buggers being there is still so much snow on the ground around here.

Going to be tough to find any food for them for a few days. Would be nice to get the warmer weather sooner and hopefully find a shoot for Easter long weekend!!!
