Default What to do with bear hides

For all you spring and fall bear hunters who kill multiples/ year or even just one every year, what do you do with all the hides? I'm thinking about spring bear hunting for the first time...( I have shot more than a few problem bears but never actually hunted them) I'm not in a financial position to get a rug or mount done so what could I do with it? I'm almost certain some of you guys dont have 10 rugs or mounts ect so what do you do with your hides?
The smart thing is probably not hunting them until I can afford to get something done but that might be years and for me the trophy part of huntung has never been the rack on the walls but rather the experience if hunting the game so the rug or mount are not my main motivation for hunting anyways..... what are my options?

You could get the hide soft tanned for your first, it would be less expensive than getting a rug done, but still not cheap

I always gave them away. The last half a doz or so were to a woman who ran a program at a school and they used them for native arts. She always needed raw bear hide and was over the moon when she got them. I gave some to friends, some to people I worked with and some to guys on here. From my experience it’s not hard to find someone who wants a hide but doesn’t want to hunt bear.

I sold one of my 2 fall bears I shot to the tannery

I think it was Western Fur Tanners in Edmonton

Took it off the bill ..it was a small fall bear ..head/paws attached

Some taxidermy shop’s will buy too

Am away right now but I could look up when back

Hope this helps

If you don't have the money to do a rug this spring then IF you get one, skin it but DO NOT SALT IT, roll it and freeze it, they will last for years, when you can afford to do one take it out of the freezer and have it done.

If your wife will allow you to put it in the deep freeze. Lol. Funny story, a few years ago my Mom (94 years old) thought she was taking some minute steak out of the deep freeze. Turned out to be beaver tails my Dad had stuck in there a couple years before he passed.

This is a great option, and yes do not salt it. Roll it up snug, bag it and into the freezer.

I have one in the freezer from this past fall and will be taking it in this weekend or the next to get tanned.

Rumor is they are likely moving towards changing the law to either the hide or meat must be salvaged instesd of just the hide.

I shoot and eat a lot of bear, but I have never done a rug. Always give hides away.

Lots of people who want to practise taxidermy take them.

They take up an incredible amount of space in a freezer. But if you have the space that works.

Alberta has it ass backwards when it comes to this. Black bear hunting never interested me because of this hide legality hassle.

The one instance when BC has it right...

One year I wanted to go after spring bear I called a taxidermy shop and pre-arranged to give them the hide in exchange for discount on future work.

Well I shot a bear that squared 7'4", gave it to them.

Then that fall shot a 167" whitetail.

Worked out great.

Got a bit of a discount on the whitetail head mount, and I imagine the taxidermy shop made a pretty decent buck off that tanned bear hide.

I had a taxidermist at one time that would take them on trade for other work that I had done

I have a question regarding this. I don't mean to hijack the thread by any means.

How much of the hide do you legally have to salvage? What if you just want a bear hide throw for your retro campervan? Do you have to take the head and paws etc?

Not sure why you would need to keep the head and feet.

I don’t know about that… I live in BC and would shoot the odd bear if I was NOT forced to recover the meat. I ate a few when I was younger but have zero interest in eating one now. Bears are voracious predators of ungulate fawns/calves and very few are getting shot due to the meat recovery requirement which was implemented to somewhat appease anti hunters.

Alberta has it absolutely right when it comes to black bear management.

Honestly people should have the choice to either take the meat or the hide. We need to increase predator harvest and that would help. I have a lot of opportunities to harvest bears but because of the hide requirement I don’t bother. If I could just take the meat I would harvest a bear given the opportunity.

I seem to remember there was a member who studied moose calf mortality and black bears were one of the largest culprits. Something to definitely think about.
