Default McGregor Lake report? Advice? Jan 16 2014

Hi guys,

Saw someone on ifishalberta say the ice is up to 20 inches (north end). I've been out there fishing many times in the summer, but haven't been ice fishing there before. Can anyone recommend any good spots to try? Assuming the north end by the rocks is just as good as in the summer.

Also, can you recommend any spots specifically for perch? and lures? I've yet to ever catch one - want to! Maggots?

What would you guys use going after pike, minnows or mackerel? etc

Thanks!!

Three spots for whites, other than the rocks at the north end. First is in the park from the boat ramp south for about 300 yds. The other two are two bays on the west side about a mile north of the south end. Go east from the south side of Vulcan (Hwy 870?) about 20 miles to the first bend in the road, make a left turn onto a gravel road that runs east about 2 miles then downhill to the lake.

I haven't fished perch there for 20 years but we used to get nice big ones along the west shore, about 1/4 mile north of the Hwy 870 causeway, just south of the fancy house where the owner has No Trespass signs so you have to walk on the ice from the Hwy. We had good luck in the scattered weeds in about 12 ft depths so about 100 yd offshore.

As for lures, check the thread on favourite perch lures and pick one.

As for pike bait, 8" herrings from Superstore work best for me.

If you go, please post a report...
Good luck!

I might be heading there tomorrow and can show you around. I know some good spots.

Went out to the Milo end with wife and son yesterday. We had a walleye to the hole and a pike just before dark.

Ice was in great shape 18-20" good ice. We could drive on and pretty well get any where we wanted. Beautiful sun set and amazing weather all day.
