Default Do you license your pets?

Some counties and cities have pet licensing requirements. They seem to want about $20-40 a year for a sterilized pet and more. Do people actually pay the government for the privilege to own a pet?

Default There is some incentive!

The fine locally is $ 250.00 and they can take your pet . Just dogs !
Cats are free !
The op posts this like its a stark revelation , you might get away with this
In the boonies but not in town or city .

Yes because it's cheaper than the fine. It's like biking, $5 be that you may never use or a $150+ fine for not having a bell at all. What's $20- $40? Most people spend way more than that on useless crap for their pets.

I live in the city, no dog licence, no bell on my bike. The government gets nothing. Take and I will take back

SPCA in Calgary and Edmonton are full way past capacity with cats and dogs. Says a lot about people.

More taxing and money taken for stupid things these days then ever before. I don't have to get a permit for taking my son for a walk and I don't clean his barff up when he lays one on the side walk, however I'm really good at cleaning my dogs mess up. Bell on my bike, what's wrong with my mouth ? I can whistle well. I understand we are all on a leash wether or not we want to believe it or not. Animal control gets paid by all of us wether we have a dog or not. I feel I'm doing my part even for those who shouldn't have a pet to begin with. I donate to the spca with cash and even continued to buy and drop off bags of dog food even when I didn't have a dog. Now I can't speak for everyone because everyone is different but I feel I go above and beyond contributing my fair share where it's needed and then some. The extra little bells and whistles one is required by law to do can kiss my rosy rear end. And that's what I mean by take and I take back, meaning I take back all I give out in kindness and what I believe. Rant over

When I did have a dog, I paid the fee. My thinking was, if he ever went missing and got picked up, then I would have gotten a phone call or I could call and they would know he was there. Tho he never did go missing, I still think it is a good fee to pay.

I pay too much in taxes already. Pet registration is just another way for the robber barons to get every last drop of blood they can out of people.

I pay them now. I wasn't paying them and I actually had a police officer come to my door to inquire as to why I have not paid them. I didn't mind, she was cute!

They sent an actual police officer to inquire about government revenue collection on pet registration?

Yea, sure did. She said she was going to come back in a few days to ticket me if they were not paid by then. Maybe she was a grunt officer but like I said, she was hot in the Kevlar.

Wow! Guess they had all the crime in Edmonton solved that day and could send the cops out to shake down pet owners. That is one messed up city!

Are you sure it wasn't and Animal Care & Control Officer?

http://www.edmonton.ca/bylaws_licenc...vices-faq.aspx

What complaints will Animal Care & Control Officers investigate?
Animal Care & Control Officers typically investigate complaints of:

Excessive barking
Dog bites or attacks
Pets without a licence
Dogs or cats at large
Failure to clean up pet defecation (poop)
Problem wildlife
Dead animals on public property

They look similar to the Police and with your brain fog due to her being so hot you may have been mistaken.

Yup and all the required shots too, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way but like a lot of people when they get busted etc it is the fault of the law or someone else's fault...

I do licence my dog, The city dog catcher has stopped me a few times because I walk with my dog off leash, first thing he asked was if she is licenced.

Usually January 1 is the renewal date, but if you buy that dog tag before Dec 31 it is half price.

As for cats to me they should be licenced to many people let them roam at night, then you have other people that toss their garbage bags in the lane and those cats rip them open and leaving a mess for others to clean up.

If I want to trap a cat I have to rent a trap and I have to pay for it, at a tune of $50.00, which is ridiculous

What do you think pays for the SPCA and fund the spay and neuter programs...that's where most of the licensing money goes.
The work the SPCA did reuniting Ft McMurray residents with lost pets.
I'm always baffled by people that complain about things like this (and taxes in general) and think things like the SPCA, roads, sidewalk and all the other services we take for granted just appear out of thin air like magic.

In Strathcona county if you want more than 2 dogs you have to pay an extra $70/yr for an "over the limit permit". Is that the worst county to own pets in Alberta?

Because you personally like the SPCA, you are surprised that other people who don't care about it complain about being forced at gunpoint to fund and pay for it.
