Heard a nasty rumor that we might be losing the sup tags province wide. Usually I dismiss these types of rumors but this one can from a source that doesn't spread rumors and some fairly good contacts with the powers that be! Anyone hear anything?

Not sure about province wide but yes the supplemental tags have already been yanked from a few Eastern border and CWD control zones.

That would be excellent in the eastern zones.

not province wide, some zones around red deer and eastern zones, never heard anything about province wide. deer numbers are still good in the province, just hit hard east from the bad winter 2 seasons ago

Are those zones listed yet on the Alberta Relm site? If not, where can I find out?

The writting was on the wall if you read the draws booklet.

Suddenly there were draws that were not there before....

From the Important changes section of the draw booklet.

Quote:

Its about time they slowed it down, more does the better as far as I am concerned.

I see far too may killed that are only yearlings.I dont shoot does but have no problem with hunters that do, a draw works better in terms of stopping too much decimation.

We have to manage the resource not rape it with unlimited supplimental tags.

The whitetail population is healthy in AB lets keep it that way

whitetail population is healthy in AB

What does that mean?

Three men are looking at an alfalfa field with 10 whitetails in it.

One guy says "now that is a sign of a healthy deer population"

One fellow says "damn a few years ago there would have been twenty deer in that field, F&W gives out too many doe permits the deer heard is in trouble."

One fellow says "those bloody varmints are eating up my crop and I wish F&W would do something about the extreme high deer numbers."

No matter what F&W does as a management option, at least two out of this three will think it is a mistake (maybe all three will).

I'm sure the bowzone will still have 7 deer tags available over-the-counter .... too bad it's so tough to find places to hunt. It's a double whammy hunting in that zone. First you hunt just for places to hunt ... and then you hunt those places for game. Lots of work.

yup, and I enjoy it that way. I'll look for the tight, foot only access miles and miles down the line that most afternoon hunters won't find. I find myself less likely to be shot by weekend warriors that way.

Supplemental tags are an excellent way to bring, and keep, youth hunters involved in hunting. If there is a need for two tags, it would be for youth.

i hunt south peace country areas and the suppliment tags i don't see as a problem because the deer herd did take a hit over the last few years but there still plenty of deer around. There were a few years when the population peaked and it seems lots of guys use that as a benchmark of population but it was high. twenty years ago we would hunt around home and deer were alot more few and far between. But that just the area around where i'm at.

Yeah it can be a bit tough getting permission but the animals are there. But it's nice not being crowded with other hunters 15-20 mins from Edmonton city limits!!

Get read of sups for adults & keep a cheap licence for youth.

Open up antlered mule deer in a couple WMU's.
