Default What kind of fish is this?

I recently caught this fish in the south sask. river. I have been fishing for a long time and have caught many fish but never seen this before. The mouth was on the bottom identical to a whitefish, not a sucker mouth. It was about 14-16" maybe 1.5lbs.

Agreed, We use to target them at the clover bar generating station on the N. Sask River. They loved the high output water flows from there. Jig and worm or jig and minnow pitched up against the outlet wall and drifted back down in the heavy current produced some monsters. Hard fighting fish, I would love to find a new hole after the old power plant was taken off line and access blocked.

Default herabuna

While I lived in Japan, we caught fish eeriely resembling that. We called the "herabuna" ( Wish I knew how to post a pic)
Anyway, if you google herabuna, you can see a pic of the Asian quillback.

Posting pics on here is kind of a pain...your best bet is to sign up for a free account at www.photobucket.com and upload your pics there, then you can post the link here

Duckbrat, we caugh those quillback suckers up to eight pounds in there, in the exact same spot. It was a fun place to fish when I first got my drivers license.

Default quillback in book "Fishes of Alberta"

Great little paper back by Joynt and Sullivan (2003) "Fishes of Alberta" has following tidbits on this fish. " You'll need a healthy dose of good luck to see this rare and then likely misidentified prairie dweller in Alberta. Try the Red Deer River around Dinosaur Provincial Park and the North Saskatchewan River near Edmonton."...."This fish is so rare in Alberta that when it is caught most folks haven't the faintest idea what it is, so they call it anything from a Goldeye to a goldfish." They say the key for identification is the sicklelike dorsal fin.

Great picture. Thanks for sharing.

Question RE : what kind of fish is this ?

Hi ,

I found this fish at my friend's home. I'm little bit confused about its Identity. Can you tell me which is this one ?

Is this from "Cichlidae" family or other ? What's its scientific name ?

This is a strange place for 'tropical' fish ID....

Crappy pic...but I would guess a juvenile Gold Severum

Heros severum (Cichlasoma severum)
