A friend gave me a pile of conibear traps that have been sitting for years. They are quite rusty, What is a good method of cleaning them? I will dye them after cleaning. Thanks

Soaked them in vinegar and H2O for 24 hrs and hit them with a pressure washer. They were stripped to shinny metal. dipped them and they came out great.

Default granfather used coke

I remember filling pails with Coca Cola while my granfather laughed that i drank too much - let the traps sit overnight. they were shiny the next day and worked great. He was definately an old school guy but Coca Cola was used fro traps and also to take rust off the old truck bumpers- not sure why as my Grandfathers truck was sure not a show truck.

Not at all important , Muskrats are not prone to avoiding traps, and the traps will likely be set in or under water , Right? Nothing has the ability to smell under water except water shrews possibly . I,m NOT talking about fish only semiaquatic mammals.
If you feel the need to dip your traps , you are basically only protecting them from rust , and deterioration from the elements , For beaver or Muskrat for instance.

"Nothing has the ability to smell under water except water shrews possibly "

Dogs can smell things underwater. or track underwater.

I wonder if wild canines can? or felines?

I belive that trakin dogs can only smell the sent particals that are left on the waters surface and air, I dont think they can actuly smell under water. I could be wrong but that is how I understude it.
