Class C walleye tips?

How do you fish for class-C walleyes?

Yesterday on Gull Lake, we (two people with 6 class-C tags) caught 19 fish: 2 pikes and 17 walleyes. Only two walleyes are less than 43cm (Class C).

What are the tricks to catch smaller walleyes? hook size? bait size? location? water depth? weather condition?

It was fun fishing and talking to fellow fishermen, but I am a little greedy on fish too

Just keep at it. Maybe change up from using a minnow if you are jigging and go to a leach or night crawler. Just keep fishing stay longer, start earlier you will catch them. Worst case is you catch some great fish and have a good time doing it.

Shallower. Found on pigeon that we caught smaller fish a bit shallower

I usually just keep catching more walleye until the right size is in the net.

-- we fish the lake all the time, we were there on Saturday (24th), fish count was 137, our friend Rob had no problem filling his C tags, could of filled a lot more

-- go to Stoner's beach and fish in the 13 to 15 foot of water before it drops to 20-22

-- pigeon lake jig w/minnow, with stinger hook, dead still, hovering just off the bottom with just a jiggle every few minutes

-- you need braid line because the bits are that sensitive

-- Dutch store at the south end of the lake, the Wooden Shoe, has the candle lake minnows buy three tubs you will need them

-- no need to get up early, start fishing at noon ... has to do with the angle of the sun this time of year

Most of the walleye in Gull are bigger. You just need to put in the time. Try shallower, try deeper. Find a school catch a bunch of them if they are all big then try moving a bit the small fish will sometimes mingle with the larger ones but lots of the time stick by themselves.

Smaller ones are generally more aggressive, speed up your presentation, that should get you a smaller average.

you dont necessarily need braid nor a stinger hook, just pay attention to the tip of your rod and or have the line resting on your finger as you hold the jig near bottom, make sure the line is taut when you feel the bite, strike hard

It seems location is the key to catch fish or not, and to catch larger ones or smaller ones. This morning we fished at 5 locations with boat anchored (each move was less than 30 meters). The second location gave us 11 walleyes longer than 43cm. The last move resulted in totally 8 walleyes, filling our 6 class-C tags in about one hour.

Don't fish the good spots to put it simply. If you are fishing the prime habitat this time of year like drop offs and mid lake humps you will catch mostly prime fish.

Class C's are a good opportunity to just let er fly and fish that junk that no one else is.
