I hate to be a pessimist, but I suspect there will be more attacks to come.

Nine people are dead, and sixteen more are injured, many critically, after a rental van mowed down pedestrians for close to three kilometers in North York Monday afternoon.

Very sad news.

On another note (and mods, if this angers anyone, please delete it!)...

Time to ban vehicles....yeah I know .... a silly argument. But that's just how anti firearms groups spin it. Shame we can't focus the public's attention on the fact that it's not the tool that does the killing....it's the deranged person.

rant over

This doesn’t surprise me anymore. It’s becoming regular occurrence. Before long this type of thing will not even be newsworthy. Sad.

When the Paris truck attack happened I thought the same, and now it's here. Edmonton had one, now TO. Scary stuff as you can't defend against it.

That cop in the video has some balls, looks like the idiot tried to get shot with his repeated "gun" pulling.
Yet another senseless loss of too many lifes for nothing. Crazy times we're living in.

I sure miss the days of 30-50 years ago when life seemed so much better, less drama in the world, I don't remember things being so stupid back then..sorry to hear about more loss of lives for no good reason at all..
Sadly

Ah yes the good old days when all we had to worry about was the threat of nuclear annihilation 100 times over, but if you hid under your desk at school all would be ok. I Guess all the lead paint and asbestos in the school would save us.

If you watch the footage of the arrest the guy does fake draws and claims he has a gun.

Even stranger though is the three people walking by nonchalantly in the back ground - like WTF

scroll down to the take-down vid here https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/live...strian-toronto

Yuen said one suspect was in custody, the van had been located and all available resources had been mobilized to investigate the situation. Sources told CTV’s Mercedes Stephenson that the suspect is Alek Minassian.

So in your mind these are the same?
I know the police officer who was involved in the Edmonton incident last year.
Many people in Toronto will know the victims of the incident in Toronto today.
Tell me Gramps, how many people to you know that were killed in nuclear wars in the 50's. I'm also from that time, and yes it was in the back of your mind (though realistically not that much in Canada)...but now one does know that some nutbar in a truck (or heaven forbid a gun) decides he's going to have his moment of fame.

Victims of this horrific event were still laying in the street under tarps when the bickering in this thread started.

Good grief! Not a good look folks....

Until more information is provided, I will reserve judgment and say a little prayer for the innocents who’s lives were lost or forever changed on this sad day.

But because our government will refuse to admit that this was an act of terrorism, he will likely end up doing a stay in a mental institution, and then he will be released back into society at some point, to once again become a threat.

Do you support the death penalty because it is an effective deterrent that saves the legal system money long term or because revenge makes you feel good for a little while?

I'd say execute him as well because he doesn't need to live after that. He is not needed or wanted. I support death penalty proudly.

I used to support the death penalty until I realized locked away in a cell for the rest of life would be a fate worse than death. He was trying to commit suicide by cop why grant his wish?

I would like to see his cell wallpapered with the pictures of his victims and to be in Mexico to cut down on costs.

That is kind of a stupid question.

The death penalty should exist for neither of those reasons. It should exist as a means to provide justice for victims of crimes that would call for the death penalty.

For example - India has imposed the death penalty on child rapists.

We have a legal system though, not a justice system. We can never have a justice system because justice isn’t the same to everyone.

Some people will feel that justice is putting a rapist to death and some will feel that a sentence of x years is sufficient. Some will feel that failing to follow the Firearms Act should involve automatic multi year sentences and others will feel that there should maybe only be a monetary fine for violating a paper law.

Whose version of “justice” do we go with? Not even considering that the death penalty isn’t a deterrent and winds up costing more in the long term.

I agree. But where did we lose the solidarity of what is justice?

I support the death penalty, because if carried out properly, it is cheaper long term, and there is zero chance of the criminal re-offending. If it serves as a deterrent, that would be a bonus.

Ink me in for both, no need to go either or with two stellar options that aren't mutually exclusive.

The only reason the death penalty isn't quick and cheap comes down to lawyers. Get the verdict and pass the sentence within the week, or even the same day.

So the “solution” is to remove the appeal process.

In your mind, what percentage of wrongful convictions/executions is acceptable?

2 out of 3. (Sarcasm off)

Its arguments such as this why we have such a recidivism issue and why Vince Li is walking the streets these days. Its also why gang leader Nick Chan was just released to walk among us. I ask you how innocent you think Vince Li is (literally a busload of people witnessed him committing the decapitation and cannibalism), and then we have this Toronto wanker who was arrested on video, obviously guilty and he's still called a "suspect". I submit that when evidence is so iron clad such as in these cases and others that there is no such thing as an appeal, and really not even much of a trial. The offender should just attend court to get their punishment for the acts they committed on video handed down to them. It would be pretty easy for police to establish an uninterrupted video of Minassian throughout his vehicular rampage by splicing together security cam footage from all the way along his route. His arrest is obviously recorded too. Where would your objection lie with that in his specific case? And no invoking "but if they did that here they could do that there" because that rabbit hole is bottomless. THIS SPECIFIC CASE.

The 'but what if's' from criminal apologists are simply ruining society and quite frankly I'm sick of the deviant thought processes behind it.

You could greatly reduce wrongful convictions if the law was changed to sentence anyone that gave false testimony, or coerced false testimony, or planted or withheld evidence, to the same sentence as the accused. That would apply to everyone, including prosecutors and police. A big part of the Donald Marshall conviction was the false testimony that the police coerced another prisoner to give. Would they have been so anxious to coerce the other prisoner to give that testimony if it meant that getting caught would result in them facing the death sentence? The sad fact, is that those responsible were never held accountable.

dick284 and I were enjoying las vegas last year when the England van incident happened. much the same recipe as this crime here.
this is going to keep happening and it is unstoppable as long as cultures maintain a faith in there imposed world view.
it makes me cringe....guess the flags meant for humbolt are staying down now for another one.

Why is it that this type on mentally ill person doing this kind of thing always seems to be western society? Or do these things go on in other countries but we just don't hear about it?

It goes on everywhere, its just we can only absorb so much in our news feeds daily. China and India will have all kinds of atrocities happening because they each have more than 30 times our population. I've read of organized gang knife attacks in China where multiple attackers killed and wounded many people. Here's that one (notable for its scale among others they've suffered) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Kunming_attack
