Waiting for this cold snap to end I've been playing with acetate thread. Bought many different colors from Wholesale Sports for cheap. Hopefully some of these will work on some Whites. Tight Lines

I've used some of that chartreuse acetate stuff to wrap around the tip of a plain red WW. Makes a nice little ball and it doesn't weight down the tip of the hook as much as a bead, in my experience. And you can add it anywhere you want on your hook, I like to put it right near the bend, just a little ball. It's bright like a bead and you can definitely see when they inhale it :-)

Well a new season is just around the corner . I'm playing with a few more designs of Wire-Worms. The best to all, in the incoming 2018/19 season . Tight Lines and most importantly Be Safe on that ice

Hey J-J .... I updated the Title to 2018/19 ... looks like you got a head start on some fine W/W's. I've got a few idea's for some new patterns, too. Today (Nov 18th) it rained & rained here in Sylvan, we lost almost all the ice that formed a few days ago, less than 1 month to opening day, should be interesting.
Edit ... Like the Kamik boots you picked up, tag says good to -100F then the equivalent Celsius -74C thought that was interesting for a "Made in Canada" product, you won't need any wool socks in those!
Nice to see all my Photobucket pic's are back
Cheers
David

After reading this last week at work I thought I would head down to Airdrie and grab some stuff to start making w/w. Didn't find everything I wanted but got started. I couldn't find all 20 Ga wire had to settle for 26 as well. Only found 1 bead style and think they are too small but I will get more when I have more time.
Thanks all so far for the great info on this site as well. Looking forward to gull/sylvan whitefish this year.

Skawtty ... welcome & tks for sharing, you've got some nice combo patterns in brass/red, I'm sure they'll produce this season.
Cheers

Nice to read the positive feedback & continue to see members contributing & sharing information to help others on this thread/topic .
We’re about to start the 2018 hard water season and I’m sure there will be a number of new creative W/W patterns posted herein that will inspire others to either make or take up the hobby.
Tonight, I grabbed my 3 ice fishin rods from the garage, for those members that are wondering what works these are the patterns I ended my season with in late December before we departed to SoCal.
For those who follow my posts Barbie produced on the 2nd or 3rd day out so don’t overlook using a “red” color combo on one of your rods.
Tomorrow in the spirit of the Grey Cup, I may have to make a few W/W’s that match the winning teams colors. Should be easy I believe they’re both the same.
More to follow.
D.
AKA ... Barbie
Try to find some Pink Mag's they sure can help on slow days.

Here are a few "test patterns" I tied up while watching that madness on TNF.
Not my best work because I couldn't take my eyes off that game for long...lol.
Test flight happens with the fine copper and white bead Saturday.

Scott ... I'm hoping to get to try one of these prototype's out on Gull next week. They look so yummy those big Whites in Gull would inhale them down to their gut, may have to pinch the barbs down.

My fishin Buddy gave me a handful of his prototypes to try first thing in the AM, by early afternoon, he took most of them back and that's when things started to get competitive. More to follow on this story .... it's got to do with a dumb song about M-Rats & Love!

Turns out the fine copper with white bead are "hot" for catching Muskrat!
Had some success w/whites on the black/red combo.
Cheers,
Scott.

Here’s to hoping I can create something!!
Could only find glow beads on the pre-made “zak tackle” hooks.
Have an idea for the pink UV squids in a wire worm.

Dec 15th ... we were out on Sylvan (Norglenwold) today, these worked for me, was a bit surprised how the Whites chased the Bright Yellow in the late morning & early afternoon on a sunny day. They showed more interest in it than the Candy Cane Y/O.

I let Zip recover his good luck today as I stayed home cuz... well... Football!
Made a few new ones while watching (a few sloppy ones as it's hard to wrap tight when you are laughing out loud at the Cowboys!).
Cheers,
Scott.

Agreed on the candy cane glow bead. No pic but the brass bead scud pattern was deadly today as well.
Great day with great company and even got to watch the end of a fellow members frustration w/whites!!
Cheers,
Scott.

Fishin Tip …… W/W's & Flutter Spoons
I’ve used Wetaskiwin’s when I first started fishin Sylvan for Whites, didn’t like them because they snag more fish than properly hooking them in the mouth. I liked the flutter action you get with them & decided to modify a few by drilling a 5/32 hole in the bottom, adding a split ring and the appropriate sized treble hook. I sorted through a bunch of old tackle and salvaged the components I needed or you can buy them at any fishin store including Cdn Tire.
I add a Pink Mag only on one of the hooks and that’s what Mr White, Walleye, Pike and the occasional Perch chase after. For even greater success for Whites, I add a W/W approx. 5-6 sometimes 8” above the flutter spoon. If they’re aggressive you can get them on the spoon, if not they’re attracted by the spoon’s fluttering action & hit the W/W most of the time. If fishin on sand or rock/rubble bottom, I’ll flash the spoon a number of times then drop it to the bottom stirs up some sand & leave it lying on the bottom, the Whites come over & hit the W/W. I only use a Flutter spoon & W/W on 1 rod, I select a popular color W/W that produces fish and some days it works & other days it doesn’t. An option for your consideration that may improve your success with Whites.
The flutter spoons in my pic’s are the Wetaskiwins, Kastmaster and a Slender Spoon, the major fishin stores sell them.
Trust this has been helpful …
Cheers
David

Very basic question for someone who's never got a Lake White, Do you put bait such as a maggot on the wireworm? or is it more of a 'fly nymph' approach like the copper john?
Thanks

Don't be afraid to use any flies you've tied. I personaly like using a hares ear nymph with a pheasant hurl head . Bit of lead weight for faster sinking in deep water , none for shallower water . Anything that resembles the small freshwater shrimp works amazing around any weeds or grass bottom. I've found fewer refusals with flies. The only difference is you tie the flies with the hook up for ice fishing instead of down for fly fishing. good luck

Edit ..... were at 99,993 views this should take it over 100K ....
Post this previously ....
Fishin Tip ... another advantage of tipping your w/w with a Pink Mag is when your sight fishin in deeper or stained water you can clearly see were the hook end is, which helps when Mr White inhales it & you see it disappear then set the hook fast before it spits it out. The glow beads on my w/w's help me see the hook end of the presentation, similar to Pink Mag's.

I’ve been reading this thread with lots of interest and would like to thank Zip for such a great thread. Today I’m sitting on a beach in Mexico drinking beer and made up some of the stuff he has been talking about to try when I get home. All but 8 are 10’s and those 8 are 12’s, should I go bigger?
