Usually not safe till sometime towards late Dec. But on the plus side it usually is fishable into early May.

2 years ago I was up there mid December and I almost had a heart attack. I pull up to the lake and there were 3 family out skating on it. It looked to be about 1" thick. Even though they were out there skating I still had to drill a hole about 10 feet from shore to put my mind at ease. haha! It was 6" of such clear ice it sure freaked a guy out. I imagine this year being such a warm fall it will need a few extra weeks to get good ice.

Seeing as there have been no further updates, I'll add that the south end was wide open, shore to shore, as of Saturday Dec 3rd. Very thin ice was present north and west of Driftwood, but didn't look like it would even come close to supporting a person. This cold will help, but I wouldn't plan on it being reliable until the usual mid-December time period, as others have stated.

I love fishing spray. Especially with the marcum camera. Really neat to watch them come in.
