Default Cleaning a CZ 455 Varmint 22lr

So I just bought my first new 22lr, a CZ 455 Varmint. Frankly, I have never cleaned a 22lr bore and have never heard of any of my friends or family doing it. I have always been pretty good about my hunting barrels being kept clean. What about this CZ 22lr?

Be careful with a rod. There is a piece under the bolt that will scratch it if you don’t have a bore guide.

There is some real thick shipping grease in the barrel that you definitely want to get out. Mix some Hoppes and Kroil, apply liberally and let sit. It will take a half dozen applications to get it all out.

It can take ALLOT of 22 ammo to foul a barrel, so I trust it's the initial clean you're asking about. (a bit of barrel fouling can actually improve accuracy with a 22)

For the serious cleanings, you owe it to yourself to get a bore guide. I use one now for all my bolt guns. (all gun specific) I also use ProShot rods, jags, brushes, etc. Nordic Marskman (Brad) in the east coast might be one of the best resources/suppliers OF rimfire cleaning gear. All of my cleaning inquiries have gone to him in the last year, and most of them end there too. I've bought 2 rods, 2 bore guides...and a portable/travel ProShot kit too. And a gun.

For initial cleanings (I used this for EVERYTHING up until about a year ago) I use the Patchworm Kit from 20/20 concepts; http://patchworm.com/patchworm.html Excellent product for the $, and they have a .17 kit too. For tougher 22 jobs, using this kit, you can grab their "super intensive felt" http://patchworm.com/patches-felts.html They do a great job. I have the kit, a spare cord, the felts, and a .17 cord.

You will best be served by buying a cleaning rod for a .17 caliber rimfire.
The chambers in the CZ are tight and generally speaking the every day run of the mill .22 rimfire rods are a tad thick.
Enjoy the CZ in the gopher patch.

Default cleaning a .22

I made a fair bore guide out of an empty 20 ga shotshell hull that I deprimed and opened up to .22" in diameter. It fit a CZ receiver and depressed the bolt stop mentioned above. Certainly not as good as a custom for CZ 452-455 bore guide but a lot better than no guide at all. The advice on the .17 rod is sound too. As is using a .20 cal rod if you have one around for the .204.

A CZ can destroy the coating on a coated rod. Post 2 and post 5 discuss this.

To clean my CZ 22's......

First insert a Possum Hollow bore guide. This will solve the issue talked about in post 2. Available at Brownells or YoDave. It may be available locally but I'm not sure.

I use a Dewey coated rod. The 22 cal version is too tight to fit in a cz bore.
I use the 20 cal model and it fits fine.

The only issue is that you need an adapter as 22 cal brushes use a different thread than 20 cal brushes.

I picked up the rod and adapter at P&D .

Thanks for all the input. Having a look locally first and then for what is missing I will have to order I guess.

Default Gun cleaning

Have a look at the Otis cleaning system, It stores in a case you can hold in one hand. Easy to carry, has two plastic coated wires for rifles shotguns and one for pistols. 17 cal to 12ga--patches to match. no worry about barrel damage, very easy to use---Oh yes perfect for semi autos.
