Higher quality,sensitive spincast combo??
Good day guys, I’m on the hunt for a rod/reel set up for my in-laws. They are two lovely people with a pontoon boat and a fondness for jigging walleye. This weekend the ol’ boy broke his 15 yr old set up horsing a hammer-handle up and over the railing and the mother-in-law was constantly complaining about never “feeling bottom”. I’d like to surprise them with a good quality spin cast setup and I’m looking for suggestions. The father in-law fished with a 5pc micro rod and the mother-in-law wields an ugly stick spin-cast combo, I’d like to upgrade them If possible. Shoot your suggestions my way please......

I wasn’t too concerned about budget but I guess it could get a little pricey. How about $200 per in-law, that should set me up well.

I should also add that a rod between 5-6’ is what they like.

5-6' is not long enough. Bare minimum, you want 6'6", but I'd go 7', personally. Something Medium-Fast. Shimano or Pflueger reel on a Shimano Convergence or Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye....

I was thinking a GLoomis e6x but that’s a bit more than you’re looking to spend. I’ll look into stuff in that range. Nowadays it’ll be hard to find a higher end combo for $200.
If their reels are working fine I’d suggest buying them something like a St Croix premier for $190

Not trying to be a downer because i love buying more fishing gear and pretending that i work at a fishing store.... but the flag i heard is that they are hauling fish over the side of the boat with the rod. There is a large likelyhood of snapping any newer graphite/carbon style rods like that. Which means you are into fliberglass uglysticks, which then arent that good on sensitivty/feel type of thing.
Are you going to buy a nicer set up and then do some educating on some general dos and donts of a nicer rod? Kind of hard to do with some older people that have been doing something the same way forever and they may not like the hassle?
If you are going to get a nicer set up then stick to the 6ft range for mostly jigging. Or if there is some casting as well then go to a 6'6". You dont need to spend a ton, $200 each is a pretty nice set up. But you can get a doable rod for around $30-100 and then the reel the same, so just depends what you want to do.
Good luck man! Thats a nice gift either way!

I would include a net in the budget as well.

For around $90 you could try the Pflueger Trion combo. 6'6" just pair it with some decent braided line10-15lb test. My 2 cents.

oh a net was mentioned but chances they are not sitting in the same chair... well not in public ...so I would get them a net each....one that can reach over the rail and nicely land an eye....without disrupting the other.

Are you looking for a spin cast setup or a spinning setup? Title says spin cast, but most of the suggestions have been spinning.
If you are looking spinning, it’s really hard to go wrong with a Shimano rod and reel. I have Symetre, Saros, Stradics, and Stradic Ci4+ spinning reels and they are all bulletproof. BTW, it looks like a new Stradic Ci4+ will be unveiled next week. Shimano had a teaser on social media today. Current models will likely go on sale when that happens.

Lol. Thanks for the help guys. We have a nice long net but sometimes the ol boy gets impatient. It is definitely a Spincast setup I’m looking for, not spinning. I’ll look at maybe a pflueger set up. Any recommendations on line??

I was going to suggest power pro until he said it was spincast reels. Not sure you should use synthetic line on a spincast reel.
