whatever shotgun I decide to hunt with that day, but I never shoot over 7/8oz in my shotguns when hunting ruffed grouse.
7/8oz of shot makes no difference when it comes to 12,.16,20, or 28, smokeless or black powder.

If I am shooting grouse on the ground, I shoot high to try and catch the head and neck with the bottom of the pattern; so gauge really doesn't matter.

Depends , can you shoot? Lol 410 is more that enough if your the guy who takes his time and actually aims...but if your the guy who gets too excited I'd suggest a 12 Guage lol, I shot with a 28 Guage my whole life and I always got more birds than my friends and very few that were blew up. Don't wanna waste any of that delicious grouse breast

I use either a 410 or 20 guage. Like the 20 as it is an O/U versus the 410 that is a pump. Next year going to get an O/U in 410 as well.
Great pics cat but have to azk. Did you or did you know someone who worked for forestry as your stetson sure looks like our uniform one.

grouse medicine
28 ga has more than enough shot to get the job done, without over-kill of the mighty 12!
5/8 or 3/4 oz load.

Birds on the ground 22 long rifle works great, on the wing I prefer a 20 ga over a 410..

I just use my 12. Cheapest option (other than a 22).

Lots of smoke with the 13ga too. When you let both barrels loose it can be hard to tell if you hit or not without a cross wind.

410 single shot
The rub has been this week that I'm loaded for pheasants (home rolled 3" #5 with 13 gr. of lil gun) and it is a bit much for grouse. The last one I got, I was close and luck, a head shot with devastating effect. I'm glad the dog brought it back.
