Any big deer being taken yet??

Define “Big”?

I shot one 2 days ago that I think is pretty respectable. If I lived in the area and not 1100 kms away I might have had a different idea of what big is. But I don’t live in the area and with 2 solid days of scouting before the opener I didn’t see a bigger buck. With a 4 day actual hunt I decided not to pass on a buck the first day that I’d be happy with on the last. Well, there’s a bit more to the story but I also figured by mid morning my hunt might also be cut short. Once I can type with more than 1 finger I’ll tell the story...

I’ll do up a complete story once I’m done dealing with a few things and get some pics downloaded from my camera. Cell phones don’t last outside at -25 for long and since I hunt alone the camera can be set up for 10 second delay so I can get in the pic.

Big is Boone and Crockett or something special. Maybe a non typical or it has huge mass or has a massive frame. Once in a life time critters, or once every few years for those that know what they are doing.

Well there you go. Big is very subjective. Mine wasn’t big by your books. Although with the frost bite I got getting him he is something special to me. May be the last one I shoot pulling the trigger with that finger. Diabetes sucks. Take care of yourselves guys.

I shot this Monday morning, (Saskatchewan) I was born and raised in west central Alberta and moved to sask a few years ago to be closer to my fiance's family.
This is my first rifle Mule deer and my first Saskatchewan buck.

Rough score:
Gross 188 7/8
Net 185 4/8

I got drawn in a zone I had never been to and I only had a couple of days to hunt. I wanted to take a prairie buck, as I has i have taken a few 170s archery bucks in more farm land.

I went down in August and archery season to get permission but I wasn't allowed to enter the pasture until Nov 1 and the cattle was off.

Long story short, my dad came down with me and we hiked back into a big pfra pasture. We got a couple miles away from the roads and started to see does. I said to my dad, "with this many does around there has to be a buck somewhere" as we came around the next hill and this buck was bedded along the creek bed. I crawled to the top of the hill and ranged him 380 - too far for me. We did a big stock and got to 200 yards of where he should be. Shortly after he walked up out of the creek bed and I hammered him.

We had to cross the creek a couple times and pack him out, so it was a great time with my father and to top it off I shot him with my grandfathers rifle. This was the first morning of my hunt and it was the first buck I had seen. I didn't really know what I had until I got home and put a tape on him

This is my Whitetail for this year. Biggest one I have ever gotten. Splits brow tine on one side, heavy rack with lots of character.
