Default 25-06 build

I am turning my first rifle 3006 into a 2506 since I no longer use my 30 cal. I want to get use out of my first firearm and know I will use it in a smaller cal. I am looking for some advice on barrel choice. I want a barrel that holds a good twist for the caliber, good life, and doesn’t heat up super fast. However it is going to be a hunting rifle so i don’t want an overwhelmingly heavy gun. Any help is appreciated!

Talk to Karl at K&S Gunsmiths, they make great barrels and it is local so the prices are a bit better than ordering from the states. Bob Jury is also local and makes gain twist barrels. That barrel would be a good choice if you want to shoot heavy for caliber, as in 120+ grain but these are all custom order as commonly 25 cal is 120 grain or less.

Barrel life will be pretty much the same no matter what make barrel you get, it is far more dependent on load, cleaning etc, than maker. As far as wist goes, figure out the heaviest bullets you will want to shoot and get the twist for that. The shorter, lighter bullets will usually still work fine with the faster twist. I would strongly suggest at least a 26" barrel to take max advantage of the overbore capacity and a 1/9 twist for 120 and below bullets.

I have had 4 2506 builds the last one was on a #3
1-10 benchmarkk barrel shot fantastic . I found The contour a bit heavy didn't Ballance property for me in a light stock needed a wooden stock to correct . After I burn out the barrel in the one I have now It's going to be a #2 finished at 24 in a 1-8 or 1-9 twist and concentrate on heavier bullets seen some spectacular results from that combination .

i would look hard at a carbon barrel if weight was an issue. Getting to be multiple options and would go 26" if elk and moose were on the menu, I would feel under gunned with the 25-06 unless shots were kept at a sane distance and shot placement was optimum.

I have 3 rifles fitted with JC Custom bbls. All are VG shooters. JC is great to deal with and is fairly quick turnaround and is a CDN bbl maker to boot.

If you're considering a 25-06 and are a handloader, I would suggest the 6.5-06 as well. Would offer some heavier bullets and a better selection.

6.5 06 is a dynamite choice. My Savage in 25 may get a prefit just because of this.....a friend loads H1000 with a drop tube and is over 3000 fps with 143 grain bullets, thats impressive.

I'm in the process of re-barreling my 30-06 as well. Going to 280 ai with a Proof Research carbon fiber barrel. I can't truly recommend it yet since it's not installed, but holding that and a Lilja hand in hand you can REALLY feel the difference in weight.
