Default Tell me about Bees....

So.... I want to get some bees this spring/summer I've done a fair bit of research on procedures and such. But was looking into where to buy the actual bees and surpas from?

With 1300+ posts and having been on here since 2009 I suspect the OP might well be rubbing salt in our missing bee experts wound

I actually thought the OP's question was quite legit.
Bee keeping seems to be getting quite popular these days.....

I'm tempted to mention it just to put to rest the myth that the 'insiders' and 'high post count' members get away with everything and anything.

Fire at will Mikey.

Alberta honey producers co-op (aka beemaid honey) in spruce grove has all the bee equipment you need and also supply package bees and queens. Otherwise talk to a local beekeeper and they will likely be willing to to sell you a couple established hives. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

Talk to Derrick at the honey co-op and he will know who is close by that might have bees for sale. Buying an established hive is probably the easiest way to get started. I do believe that there is a hobby group around Grande Prairie that might be worth looking into. I will see if I can dig up a contact but I can't promise anything there. If you have trouble finding bees I'm in High Prairie and could probably spare a hive or two in the spring.

Thanks Gust.
I started 2 hives last year and am being mentored by a retired beekeeper, but hate calling him every time I have a question. One hive did real good - the other one had a weak queen and before I realized it the wasps had taken over. So I have 1 wrapped strong hive and am looking to get 3 nucs for a total of 4 hives this spring. The website you gave is just what I need. Was always looking for a course in Leth college or somewhere but will now register for the Calgary ABC in March.

Mike I wouldn't take that from him

On a thread related note I've always thought of keeping some hives but just haven't gotten into it yet. I've always thought bee keeping would be a great hobby

I took a bee keeping course, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think beekeeping is a grat hobby. I never did get around to getting into it. Too many other things on the go.

I'm not sure it would make a good business, though. Too easy ......to get stung.

Sorry for the derail;
He's a regular actor now stateside, but his routines were always done as a transvestite. I'll start a thread of my favorites he does and I'll add a very funny routine by a canuck comedian who's now on the Gerry Dee show,

I can't seem to find anything about the hobby group in gp but if you're only looking for 20 or 30 lbs of honey it is far cheaper to just buy it. Expect to see 200-300 lbs from a well managed hive on a good year, it does make a great christmas present though. Also if you compare it as a hobby to hunting, fishing, golf or almost anything else it is probably the only one that you could make money from.
