Or you could save over a thousand bucks and buy some more oars. At least you know those will work.

Just did a little reading online, these appear to be made in China for Coleman, as well as other non-typical outboard makes. I’d be very leery, especially in a few years if parts or service were ever required.
It could be a wicked good deal on an 4 stroke outboard, or a very expensive anchor, hard to say.

I would rather have an older 1000 dollar merc/evenrude/Yamaha than a new 1000 dollar Coleman. Each to their own.

Canadian Tire has sales at different stores sometimes. I’ve found this in the past where something is on sale up in one end of the city but not the other. They said it was to get rid of stock to me.

Yeah I hear you, I'm in SK so when I open it up it shows the Moose Jaw store inventory and prices. It must be an individual store sale not a chain wide thing.

I know where you can buy a 4-stroke Tohatsu 9.8 long leg for $1500. You will have to come to BC to get it. Bring ⛽️

Just back from Sherwood Park store, they are short shaft units 15". Too short for bigger boats.

I've seen these units a few times before, does anyone know if they are worth buying?
I'm kind of thinking along the lines of Talking Moose that I may be better off buying a used Merc etc.

I wouldn't buy anything you rely on from CT. Do buy paper towels and house cleaning supplies though. Oh, and dog treats.
CT, stands for Complete Trash!! But that's JMHO.

Reviving an old thread. I’m just curious if anyone bought one of these and how it worked out for them? Dealer in town here was selling them as well, always tempting ‘cause they are so cheap but I don’t really like to row 5 miles home upstream and my early 80’s 7.5 Evinrude always runs.

I would stay away from Parsun Chinese products (like this Coleman). What do you do when it breaks down? and it will.
Tohatsu is the best bang for your buck here, Japanese company, albeit, with some manufacturing in China, they are essentially Mercury representing nearly 100% of Mercury's product line 50 hp and down.
If you want something to last a lifetime and start on the first pull - then buy a Honda. They are the most bullet proof option reliability on the planet - like a simple sewing machine. Simply above average in weight, power, fuel efficiency etc... they do everything well. Underwhelming however, depends what you value in your outboard.
Don't have much experience with Yamaha's newer small motors - but they have also been a solid choice from a trusted and well engineered product. Had a few older small yammy's in the day and they were like Honda's - reliable and easy to maintain.

X2 I've been going to a fly-in lodge for the last 10 years, they have 9.9 & 15hp Tohatsu 4 strokes. For the price..... they are a decent motor. Always start right up and run great.

If you're willing to bet it works when you need it, Crappy Tire sells some real junk these days.

If you had to spend more than double the money on a Yamaha / evinrude it would be a better deal. Gimme a 30 yr old evinrude over a brand new Chinese outboard, no matter who puts their name on the side of it.
I can still buy parts for my 1957 evinrude 7.5.

9.8 really??? Can't get the 9.9? I will stick with all my Yammy's. Would still take a 1959 6 Rude over that 9.8.

I agree with the general consensus, I’d be nervous of the thing too just because I don’t trust many “made in China” products but does anybody actually have any real experience with these things or is it all just heresy?

It's like all other 9.9's they range in actual output anywhere from 9.5 to 11 hp.
The 9.9 hp designation (under 10 hp) allows boater in a few countries not to register their boats and watercraft - it's really an artificial number really.
I was trying to find where I read this .... (and it makes sense)
The reason Tohatsu rates at 9.8 is simply because they cannot (by contract) cannibalize and compete with Mercury in the same market in the space for that size of motor.
They are, however, almost identical. Tohatsu makes 100% of mercury's product line in the exact factory, off the same production line for all motors 50 hp and down.
I also believe this because I poked around and fiddled with two brand new ones side by side, just out of the box, at a dealer. (Europa Canopy in Edmonton)
If you lift the covers and see them side by side brand new - I could not see a difference - even down to the stickers on the "unbranded" wiring harness, internal cover, and even filters.
Even the stickers, warning labels, etc... are identical except one has mercury on it and the other Tohastsu. Identical location, identical everything.
The only difference that matters was the Tohatsu was $1000 less.

There is a reason the price is drastically reduced. They don't sell because people are getting sick of buying junk.
People who will buy them will throw them in the trunk of their Lada on the way out of town with their mail order bride for a honeymoon to their favourite 5 acre slough.
Hopefully Covid will have a positive effect by reducing the number of imports from places like China.
